This : This could be secondary to an infection (abscess), wart, trauma, etc. It is very difficult to say without a more detailed history and physical. If the "lump" is still present please encourage your roommate to see a doctor.

Are you: sure you didn't injure the nail bed????
Trauma is the main cause for what you describe .
On occasion, (rarely) nail fungus affects only one fingernail so try an OTC (Pharmacy) anti-fungal liquid. If no improvement..a consultation with a DERMATOLOGIST is the best source of expertise!

Finger: It could be a finger sprain. It's not clear how it was injured. Did something fall on it or did you fall or did something else happen? When did it happen? If it was less than a week ago, then this could normal healing. It could also be something else such as a fracture. So it depends on how and when this injury occurred.
