My doctor suggested allergy testing after severe rashes after taking two different classes of antibiotics. What exactly is involved in that?

Usually

after giving a good history of allergic symptoms / situation, you get about 100 tiny needle pokes w/different antigens (things you might be allergic to). Then you sit and wait for several minutes. If you are allergic to something tested, will seem longer b/c will start to itch/swell in spot where stuck. Test read by size of reactions around each poke & Allergist interprets +/- and goes over w/you.

Dr. Manav Singla answered:

Is allergy testing necessary to treat the cause of eczema? I've heard a lot mentioned regarding knowing what a persons allergies are.

Usually not

Hypersensitivity
depends on the age. in infants and toddlers, food allergies can often play a role, so testing can be helpful. in older kids and adults, it does not always help identify triggers. but it can still be helpful - i find dust mite allergy seems to correlate to eczema. plus, often patients with eczema have other issues (sinus, respiratory) that allergy testing can help identify.

Dr. Cornelia Franz answered:

18 month old had bloodwork done following allergy testing. Her igE levels were low and they want to repeat test in 4 wks. What does low igE cause?

Nothing

Allergist
Low IgE is "normal". If the concern is that she has symptoms of allergies and a low IgE they want to see if it goes up in 4 weeks which would be more suggestive of allergies. Elevated IgE is sign of allergies. A low IgE is actually normal. Under 4 years old children's allergies change dramatically every 6 months so sometimes we need to follow with serial tests...

Is there such a thing as allergy testing for migraines?

Migraine & allergy

Allergy_tests
Great question, actually. A large number of people have migraines (up to 10%), and even more have allergies (25%). Migraines and allergies each have their own triggers. So we don't generally do allergy tests for migraine patients' headaches. BUT, a migraine sufferer who also has allergies should have them treated, because they can aggravate migraines and decrease quality of life significantly.

Does allergy testing detect all allergies?

No

Allergy_tests
Appropriate allergy testing is guided by the patients history and physical examination. Based upon this one's allergist will make a decision what to be tested for. The test, particularly for outdoor allergens is based upon the common allergens is that particular agricultural zone. Does this mean that all allergens will be tested no.

Dr. Susan Mathison answered:

I have to go for allergy testing tomorrow. what happens to me during and after?

Allergy testing

There are several different kinds of allergy testing. One is a simple blood draw....takes a few days to get results back, the others are via skin testing......you likely have avoided anti-histamines like loratidine and ceterizine. These tests can take up to an hour, but results are know right away. Your arm will have some reddish bumps if you are allergic, These will decrease in a day or so.

Dr. Paul M. Carter answered:

I have to go for allergy testing tomorrow. what happens if I have a really major reaction?

Allergy Testing

Skin_allergy_test
Allergy testing is designed to cause a small skin reaction, but rarely ever causes any other symptoms. You have very very minimal chance of a "major" reaction. Only itching where the test is placed. This can be treated with topicals and an oral antihistamine and resolves fairly quickly.

Does naturopathic allergy testing work well?

Buyer be ware.

Allergic_reaction
There are many practitioners out there that are doing things that they call allergy testing that don't have any basis in science or reality. Be sure you see a board certified allergist for evaluation for allergy to be sure you are getting the best possible care!!

Does allergy testing detect all your allergies or just a few?

Wrong question

Allergists
A better approach is to state your symptoms. Then your DR can begin to help define & then relieve these symptoms. Allergy testing is of very limited use towards finding the best treatment.
