Many "natural" substance are highly toxic -- eg arsenic, uranium, radon, drug and plant toxins, etc. Many "synthetic" substances are safe rand more effective than natural counterparts -- eg willow bark (aspirin), perwinkle (vincristine), fox glove (digitalis). Saliva will generally prevent something like that and thrush generally occurs in immuno compromised people.
