I've been taking generic Lasix for several months and it isn't doing the trick. Is there an alternative medication? I've been battling water retention in my feet, ankles, and legs for quite a few years. My family doctor put me on Lasix several months ago,

There: There are certainly other drugs that work like Lasix (furosemide) and that are much stronger/potent. You should talk to your doctor about alternatives, but of course, you must keep in mind your overall health condition and what you can or can't handle for example due to heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure..... In any event, you should record and limit your fluid intake daily based on your doctor's assessment. And finally, don't forget to elevate your legs as much as possible and wear the support stockings. ...Read more

My partner foot is red & swollen with purple patches, yes he had water retention about 2 yrs. No its not going up the leg like cellulitis. Any idea?

Clotting?: It sounds as if your partner needs appropriate compression garments to reduce edema and swelling but this is best for venous stasis and not necessarily for arterial insufficency. I would be concerned about varicose veins as well as a potential blood clot (s). A peripheral pulse exam and possible ultrasound imaging may be necessary to evaluate possible etiologies. ...Read more

Trick questions?: We have 2 lungs, one on the right and one on the left. Unless you are referring to the 3 lobes of the lung on the right. (fluid retention) pleural effusion or pulmonary edema is not an expected effect of januvia (sitagliptin). Lung cancer is claimed, but doubtful from januvia (sitagliptin). Pancreatic-pulmonary fistula can do this & januvia (sitagliptin) has been suspected. Common things are common, don't blame januvia (sitagliptin) yet & keep looking. ...Read more

Edema: You seem to have some real problems with either your cardiac or kidney function. See a cardiologist and get an echocardiogram to see if you have a low ejection fraction and evidence of renal disease. You may also need to have your leg veins visualized by a venous doppler study to see if you have varicose veins causing your edema. Another cause of edema is too much water and/ sodium intake. ...Read more

My wife is on Paxil (paroxetine) 20mg 1x/day for ocd. Last couple weeks lots of water retention and edema in legs. Pcp says it's Paxil (paroxetine) side efx. Is this possible?

Possible but rare: Peripheral edema happens in 0.1-1% of people, making it a rare, but possible side effect. Even more rarely (<.1%) people can develop inappropriate ADH (vasopressin) secretion and low sodium. I see that these are being checked for in labs. There are other, much more common, causes for peripheral edema also, though. ...Read more
