No: They are not the same, but sometimes have similar symptoms and treatment. Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining, while an ulcer is a hole in the lining of the stomach. It may be they were looking for an ulcer or thought they saw one, but biopsy showed the inflammation did not extend thru the lining, so this would be gastritis. Avoid ibuprofen, alcohol. Maybe (not) . . .: Everyone now agrees that h pylori is responsible for peptic ulcer disease, including gastric & duodenal ulcers. However, it's not clear that h pylori is responsible for gerd & esophagitis. However, esophagitis is associated w/pud so if we find h pylori, then we tend to treat if you/re symptomatic.
