No: They are not the same, but sometimes have similar symptoms and treatment. Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining, while an ulcer is a hole in the lining of the stomach. It may be they were looking for an ulcer or thought they saw one, but biopsy showed the inflammation did not extend thru the lining, so this would be gastritis. Avoid ibuprofen, alcohol.
