For the past few days, my left big toe has been tingling on and off. What could cause this?

Altered State.: The cause of the tingling is always the same. The electrical impulse moving along the nerve is being scrambled or disrupted. These altered or incomplete impulses are being felt as tingling. The most common cause of the tingling in the big toe, especially the medial side, is a developing bunion. Shoe pressure on the enlarging bone presses on the nerve and the altered impulse feels like tingling.

Oi tudo bem: I saw you were from Brazil tried to say Hi. Well to me numbness can be caused by lots of things you would need to explain more but a common simple cause is right shoes, high heels that push on a nerve in the toe or even hitting it like playing soccer. If you have a simple nerve injury it should go away quickly and feeling restored. If not I would see a doctor there could be other things.

Tingling in right big toe I also have varicose vains I am 52?

Neuropathy: Is possible. Nerves in lower extremities are most commonly affected. Many causes, but most common is diabetes, so have your doctor check it out. It can be simple as shoes that are too tight. Or it can be early sign of neurologic disease, such as muscular dystrophy. So a careful neurologic exam and blood tests might be necessary here.

Possible: Inflammation and swelling to the lower back region-lumbar/sacral area can create symptoms at multiple levels. There are diagnostic tests that can be performed to determine involvement. I would recommend seeing either a neurologist or orthopedist specializing in the spine. A chiropractic physician may also be of benefit.

I've been having sudden tingling numbness in my right big toe. What can this mean? I slightly sprained my right ankle recently but it has been doing better. I have some slight tingling on and off in my right calf too.

Compression: Sensation is most likely due to your recent injury. There has been some swelling and perhaps bleeding or alteration in your foot mechanics so that you are compressing or irritating the nerve that runs to your toe.
