R/O infection: Check for signs of infection: ^'ed redness, warmth, swelling. ^'ed tenderness, pus, red streaking, swollen lymph nodes or fever. Recommend keeping piercing in place unless directed by Dr (if removed – drainage tract will close up w ^'ed risk of abscess formation). Call Dr for medical evaluation. Unsure: Swelling of the flank can be looseness of the muscles, inflammation of the muscles, distention of the left colon (large intestine) with stool and gas (most likely scenario). Or a tumor (which is unlikely to go away!). Hernias are rare in the flank. I would suspect a buildup of gas and stool; you may benefit from a fiber supplement like benefiber or a laxative like miralax (polyethylene glycol). Good luck! ...Read more

Yes: A hernia here is basically a hole in the adominal wall through which intra-abdominal fat or intestines can protrude.
