It could be due to a: several conditions like De Quervain's tenosynovitis which is a painful inflammation of the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist, carpal tunnel syndrome affecting the tendon across the wrist, a radial nerve or other nerve entrapments, or an abnormal fluid collection like a ganglion cyst. Could be "overuse": If arm symptoms start just after a person begins working out with weights, there could be an "overuse" injury. A primary care doctor can check to see if cold-packs, motrin/advil, and a decreased work-out routine is all that is needed; or if a referral to a sports medicine / orthopedic doctor is needed.
