Can popliteal artery entrapment syndrome cause swelling around the ankle region with a palpable bulge along the lateral aspect of the achilles tendon?

Can popliteal artery entrapment syndrome cause swelling around the ankle region with a palpable bulge along the lateral aspect of the achilles tendon?

Varies: It varies somewhat on what structures are involved. Compressuon of the popliteal artery alone would usually cause primarily arterial inflow issues, but if the venous structures are involved, then venous outflow problems can cause swelling in the leg and foot. It is probably a lot more common, though, that you also have a condition in your foot/ ankle that is contributing. Be seen if concerned. ...Read more

When it become less painful stretching the achilles tendon will help keep the problem from returning. Anti-inflamatories and ice are good also. Get medical attention if it does not get better. ...Read more

More concerning, is that you are having some issues with your Achilles tendon. Your tendon may be showing signs of an early tendinitis, due to the change in tendon function. Tendinosis: The pain is likely at the insertion of the achilles tendon and represents inflammation, and even possible partial tear of the fibers and the lump represents active repair. Swelling in left ankle near achilles tendon. No pain or discoloration. Started after I did jumping jacks. Could it be sprained/strained?

Swelling in left ankle near achilles tendon. No pain or discoloration. Started after I did jumping jacks. Could it be sprained/strained?

Probably not: Sprains and strains are invariably accompanied by pain. Painless swelling can have many causes . If it is exercise induced it could be a nearby joint capsule, tendon sheath enlarging. Some people also have some small defects in the fascia (tissue that forms compartments in the leg) and muscle can push through these areas during exercise. Bottom line, if it is not painful I would not worry. Dr. R ...Read more
