It depends: Sounds like costochondritis. Costochondritis is inflammation at he junction between the ribs and sternum. There can be localized chest wall pain and tenderness on the front of the rib cage. Costochondritis is a relatively harmless condition and usually goes away without treatment. Possibilities!: A swelling under the left rib cage has many differential diagnoses; it could be coming from the skin( lipoma...), from the rib either the cartilage or the bone, it could be coming from the stomach or an enlarged spleen. Spleen or ribs: It can be hard to tell the cause of pain in this region of the body. Teenagers with mono can get an enlarged spleen and have pain from that. Another possibility is pain from the cartilage connected to the ribs ie costochondritis. The lowest ribs have more cartilage than the others that can really get inflamed.
