Causes Of Splinter Hemorrhages
Petechiae: Punctate cutaneous red marks, characterize very low platelets...75k is low, I've seen it a lot, and cannot recall ever seeing petechiae at that level (not low enough). Splinter hemorrhage is a sine of bacterial endocarditis...A lesson from physical diagnosis, but I have also never seen in a 35 year career. ...Read more

I have mild foot arthritis & take ibuprofen for it. Occasionally I get 1 splinter hemorrhage on 1 fingernail. Can NSAIDs cause splinter hemorrhages?
I've had splinter hemorrhages since 13 years old (just discovered what they are) and I'm 28 now. I do have P. Vera. Might P. Vera have been the cause?
Splinter hemorrhages: Are not uncommon. Most common cause is repeated trauma (it can be trivial) to the nail bed. The classic case is when they are seen in endocarditis. I did look up and found a case of p. vera that presented as extensive splinter hemorrhages. So I guess, yes, it might be the cause in your case. ...Read more
I've had splinter hemorrhages since a few years, I bit my nails a lot, can it be the cause? I have very little ones on two fingers and microscopic one

I've gotten 1 small splinter hemorrhage on 1 fingernail (at top of nail) twice in the last few months. Cause for concern or just normal wear & tear?
In vast majority of: Cases due to nail/finger trauma. (Basis for concern, as 1 piece of diagnostic pattern, is recurring, multiple fingers & toes without apparent basis for injury plus unexplained, non-localizing symptoms & persistent fever for weeks which may be a result/sign of endocarditis or other intravascular infection shedding infected microclots through the arteries & creating the finger splinter hemorrhages.) ...Read more

Hi, I have splinter hemorrhages on both thumbs but have no other symptoms. Can this be endocarditis.
Possible - unlikely: Splinter hemorrhages can be a sign of endocarditis, although they will generally then appear with lots of other signs and symptoms. However, they can also appear with various other conditions. In isolation, as you are describing, endocarditis sounds very unlikely but further evaluation may be worthwhile. ...Read more
See multiple sxs, incl splinter hemorrhages. Local consult with rhematologist. No findings support autoimmune disease. PrImary care still thinks autoi?
Autoimmunity: Sometimes an infection can mimic an autoimmune disease, since the infection 'triggers' an activation of the immune system. I would be interested to know exactly 'what' symptoms you're referring to. If you have splinter hemorrhages, then it could be endocarditis. I've seen cases that mimic autoimmune disease since the bacteria trigger things off. Make sure the doc is considering that too. ...Read more

Read reports that I have mitral valve regurgitation. Doctors failed to tell me. Also have splinter hemorrhages. Should I request an echocardiogram?
Interpreting results: It is worthwhile to be evaluated in person;it is easy to take findings out of context&make a wrong conclusion. Eg: Do you have subacute bacterial endocarditis (heart valve infection-bad), or instead minimal regurgitation (leakage) through a normal valve (harmless) & recent unnoticed injury to a fingernail? History, physical, &review of data are needed to determine if studies should be done. ...Read more
How is bacterial endocarditis diagnosed? Have splinter hemorrhages but I can rule out renal failure, trichinosis, psoriasis, and pityriasis pilaris.
ABE / SBE: Suspected by clinical history / exam. Diagnosed by transesophageal echocardiogram and blood cultures. Splinter hemorrhages are common and much much more likely related to trauma than to SBE or ABE. ...Read more
I have 15 splinter hemorrhages. No other symptoms. However, last week, I had extreme aching in my left lower leg that I've had a previous dvt. Clue?
Caution: Splinter hemorrhages does not come from dvt.
