Kidney stones: The question is why are you taking vitamin d and calcium (c) at all? Your stones could certainly be due to taking those agents. Have a physician order a 24 hour urine collection for uric acid, c and phosphorus levels. If your calcium is high in it, you may need to be on diuretics to reduce the c there. Have a doctor discuss with you the reasons you should or should not be on vit d and c. Good luck. ...Read more

My granddaughter was just told she has very small kidneys she is 11 and is experiencing very frequent urgent urination is this serious?

Doesn't make sense: Your frequency of urination depends more on the size of your bladder & that in tern is determined by how long you let it fill. My friend is wanting to know if its dangerous to have small kidneys? She has been having a lot of back pain, chills and shortness of breath.

Lungs?: Kidneys vary in size a little. What do you mean small and why are they small? If she has a chronic kidney disease and her kidneys are small as a result of that it could be related to her current symptoms. If she has mildly small kidneys and normal function this is not likely relatedat all. I wonder if her symptoms are more related to her lungs which can produce pain, chills and short breath. ...Read more

Will a small kidney stone cause pain?

Will a small kidney stone cause pain?

Ureteral stone: The size of the stone does not correlate well to the intensity of the pain. The nearly unbearable pain of "ureteral colic" is from spasm of the muscular ureter. Although likely to pass on its own within a few days, a 2-3mm stone sometimes will get stuck and fail to progress. Usually after 5 days, I recommend having the stone extracted with a ureteroscope as an outpatient. ...Read more
