Be aware: This could be a sign of a blood clot - a so called deep vein thrombosis, although this type of swelling tends to be pitting. Nonpitting edema tends to be from lymphatic obstuction or from deposition of certain substances like you see with hypothyroidism(though this tends to be bilateral - on both sides). Go to primary care: With your history i would want to make sure that they did urine tests to make sure that there is no protein in your urine. A urinalysis is the initial test done in most cases. An er is often not the best place to get this evaluated and you may be better off seeing a primary care physician who will decide if you need further referrals. ANKLE PAIN: You want to go see a foot specialist such as a podiatrist or foot and ankle orthopedics because you might have a possible fracture, severe ankle sprain, cellulitis or vascular condition. 1st find out cause: Before treating a condition, figure out it's cause. In case of swelling in feet/ankles, make sure your kidneys, liver & heart are ok. Ask if any medications might be causing your edema. Make sure you don't have a blood clot in your leg. Amlodipine is notorious for this. Assuming there's nothing wrong, keep your feet propped up.
