Sounds like: a GANGLION (the protrusion of a tendon and its sheath) which can be intermittent (It does not "show" on routine xrays...an MRI might detect it if it becomes a problem (pain ,interference with ambulation) Hope this helps! Dr Z ...Read more

Ball of foot pain: Sorry to hear, yes you should see a doctor and refer to a specialist for xrays and exam. Don't mess with it.: If you are running painlessly with a dime size lump on your foot, I see no reason to have someone fool with it. The lump will do one of three things.
