How likely is the contraction of HIV or hepatitis C from intramuscular injections?

Not likely: Intramuscular injections use sterile needles; there is absolutely no reason why you would use nonsterile needles in any sort of reputable site, so you should be safe. If these are self-administered with reused needles, then i would definitely recommend getting screened. ...Read more

Is there any connection between current avascular necrosis of hip from no known cause and 15 yr ago subarachnoid hemorrhage of unknown cause? 60 yr

Unrelated: Avascular necrosis of the hip may occur after trauma or associated with use of steroids. The subarachnoid hemorrhage may have been result of aneurysm or trauma. If there were some issue of the hip then, there would have been very obvious signs then. If new issues now, then they are unrelated. ...Read more

What are the causes / implications of eosinophil cells found in biopsy of the pericardium as a result of an effusion. 1 liter of blood was drained?

What are the causes / implications of eosinophil cells found in biopsy of the pericardium as a result of an effusion. 1 liter of blood was drained?

May be normal: Eosinophils are normal constituents of the blood and could just be from the blood that was drained. I'm quite sure that a CBC (complete blood count) was done prior to the withdrawal of blood from the pericardium. It the eosinophil count was normal then you should be fine. As is many procedures like this the physician will redo some blood tests and most likely you will have another CBC done. ...Read more

What is meant by subdural collection left temporoparietal region with mass effect. Acute on chronic sdh?

What is meant by subdural collection left temporoparietal region with mass effect. Acute on chronic sdh?

Hemorrage : The subdural collection has mixed densities, thus suggesting that it may be older with blood clot that is liquifying mixed with newer blood . These are usually the result of a traumatic brain injury. The acute on chronic refers to the differences in age of clot. The fact that there is mass effect suggests that this has reached sufficient size to "compress" the brain. Surgery is the treatment. ...Read more

How long will an intramuscular hematoma after a lap appendectomy (8 days ago) take to resolve? It’s painful, but the labs and ct showed not emergency

Uncertain, but...: Bleeding inside muscle forms clot collection on site as hematoma, which most times is self limited and resolved spontaneously in widely variable pace depending its size and personal healing ability. So, its resolution could be as short as 3-4 wks or as long as 3-6 months. Generally speaking, it is okay as long as the pain, its size and tension are slowly but surely getting better day by day... ...Read more

Can any doc tell me what is a hematoma and how heparin can cause it if given intra-muscular?

Coagulated blood: Heparin in the muscle or anywhere reduces your ability to clot so you bleed easier and longer than normal. If you are on Heparin an have a trauma to the leg for example you may have some bleeding , that blood eventually will coagulate and begin to b absorbed back into the system. Blood outside of the blood vessels is a hematoma ( a "tumor" of blood) normally not dangerous ie "black & Blue" ...Read more
