Causes Of False High Tsh Levels
Not much: Any lab can have a temporary problems doing any test accurately. That is why an abnormal level should always be repeated to verify it. There are temporary causes for high TSH (resolving subacute thyroiditis), so that a 2nd TSH level done a few weeks after an abnormal one, could be normal. Subclinical hypothyroidism will have a high TSH with other thyroid levels normal, no symptoms.
Low thyroid function: If you have a high TSH, it may be that you have hypothyroidism, which is very common & responds well to very cheap medication to correct. Low thyroid function can cause depression! So if you have thyroid hormone deficiency get treated, your depression will improve faster, even if on depression meds & the meds may not work if your thyroid hormone level is very low. See doc and get further tests.See 1 more doctor answer
Yes: Hypothyroidism can be primary - caused by a weak thyroid gland or secondary to other hormonal problems, like a pituitary problem. Or your thyroid can become dysfunctional secondary to high insulin, estrogen or cortisol. If you have functional hypothyroidism, this problem can go undetected by routine screening tests. More extensive testing can often reveal abonormalities. This is very common.See 1 more doctor answer
Can taking high doses of Kelp cause a false high TSH reading? I don't have any other symptoms of hypothyroidism, but my lab results were 7.13
Kelp and hypothyroid: Https://health. Clevelandclinic. Org/2014/09/thyroid-issues-what-you-need-to-know-about-diet-and-supplements/ Kelp in capsule form can affect the thyroid, best to avoid. Would stop all kelp resume a nromal diet and repeat studies in 6 weeks. Hypothyroidism is common in young females and the TSH may swing between normal /abnormal for months till it totally becomes abnormal. F/u w/ednocrinologist
From what I can: Gather in the literature, OC's can affect the thyroid, but I'm not sure it can cause frank hypothyroidism. I would talk to an Endocrinologist about this.
Can a miscarriage cause missed periods, high TSH levels & infertility. Diagnosed hypo 6m afte mc. Only had 6 periods since 07/12 mc 6.18.12.
Depends: A miscarriage can at time delay ovulation and cause the subsequent cycle to become irregular but it should not cause the periods to become irregular nor it has any affect on rising of the tsh. A miscarriage can indirectly affect fertility due to tubal damage or damage to the endometrial lining. Hypothyroidism however if not treated can cause irregular periods, miscarriage and infertility.
What can cause high TSH level after several years of Synthroid (thyroxine) for post ablative (graves) hypothroidism?
Usually low Thyroid: Post ablative hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland is not functioning well and thus the patient needs more thyroid hormone. A "high tsh" actually mean there is not enough thyroid in the blood, thus an increase in dosage of the synthroid (thyroxine) is needed. Go see your family doctor and he/she will make adjustments and recheck the TSH level. This is very sensitive to thyroid in the body.See 1 more doctor answer
I have a high TSH level 9.5 and normal T4 and t3 (liothyronine). Headaches and light headed. Also can this cause diabeties?
Hypothyroid: You're hypothyroid. Headaches may get better when you get treatment from your doctor for your under active thyroid.See 1 more doctor answer
Above 4.5: In most labs, a value above 4.5 is high. However, symptoms related to low thyroid correlate much better with free T4 levels, rather than tsh. There are many people with elevated tsh, normal free t4, who feel perfectly normal (subclinical hypothyroidism). Persistently high TSH levels is indicative of a failing thyroid.
Hypothyroidism: The actual thyroid hormone is T4 and t3 (liothyronine). When they are low, TSH elevates, but how high is somewhat variable, and "high tsh" per se is not dangerous. A low t4/t3 (liothyronine) can be dangerous; TSH is a good marker of thyroid function, but often it is necessary to measure ft4 or t3 (liothyronine). A mild elevation of TSH (eg. 4-10) is often without any symptoms and a normal ft4.
High tsh has no: Symptoms, but indicates hypothyroidis, which can cause fatigue increased sensitivity to cold constipation dry skin unexplained weight gain puffy face hoarseness muscle weakness elevated blood cholesterol level muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods thinning hair slowed heart rate depression impaired memor.
High TSH: Ask your doctor to correct your thyroid abnormality with medication. There is no substitute, however, for eating right and exercising.
My last blood results showed a high TSH levels but t3andt4 in normal range. Should I see someone regarding hypotyhroidism?
Yes: An elevated TSH indicates that your pituitary gland feels that your thyroid level is somewhat low. The fact that the T4 and T3 (liothyronine) are normal means that the problem is still mild. If you have symptoms of an underactive thyroid, treatment with thyroid hormone is indicated. If you have no symptoms, and the TSH is only mildly high, one can repeat the level in a few months and see if it has changed.
Hypothyroidism: The TSH test is10 times more sensitive for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism that the t4. The TSH is reported on a log scale so that small changes in the TSH value are caused by relatively big changes in the blood level. This is a reflection of the pituitary being extremely sensitive to change in the T3 (liothyronine) level if you have symptoms it would be wise to seek treatment.
I assume you mean a: High TSH with a normal T-4??? That is usually indicative of very early (subclinical) hypOthyroidism (LOW thyroid) If the gland is NORMAL size (not enlarged) your Doctor may wish to just follow this finding. Hope this is helpful! Dr Z
