If I get cold sores, what is the likely hood that I would spread it to someone's gentitles from hand contact with their gentitles?

No risk, no worries: Modified reply: I first thought you worried about infecting your own genitals. Your partner is not at risk; HSV is rarely if ever transmitted by hand-genital contact. The only way to transmit your oral herpes to someone is to kiss or perform oral sex on them when the virus is present. To be maximally safe with hand-genital contact, wash hands first -- but really no worries even if you don't. ...Read more

I picked at my cold sore and then touched my vagina. I put rubbing alcohol all over my vagina, what do I do now? I've had cold sores all my life, and rarely washed my hands before wiping, touching, etc. But haven't come up with genital herpes.

Stop Picking!: If you have recurrent cold sores, you may benefit from being on long term prophylactic (preventative) anti-viral agent (such as valcyclovir).. Don't pick your cold sores (it will only spread the virus) and don't ever use alcohol around the vagina. You're at increased risk of spreading the virus to other parts of your body and your partner's body, so please consult your md for further evaluation. ...Read more

My infant was kissed on her hand by someone with a history of cold sores (no active sore). She put her hand in her mouth; could she contracted hsv-1?

An older infant?: Actually, the majority of the population has had hsv-1 oral herpes already. We try not to spread obvious germs, so people with cold sores shouldn't kiss until the sores are gone. With young babies, it's best to avoid getting infections from other people. After a baby is older and stronger, such as at the toddler age, getting an hsv-1 infection causes mouth and gum sores, but the toddlers recover. ...Read more
