What causes a cyst to calcify?

Calcified cyst: Are you referring to breast cysts with calcified walls? I'm not exactly sure, maybe some inflammatory reaction of the cyst wall. What I do know is that calcified cysts are a radiologist's best friend on mammography...easy to see, and 100% benign. ...Read more

What is a questionable punctate calcific density in the kidney, CT report says that. Also, what is a 1.2 CM probable cyst in the lower pole of kidney?

Kidney abnormalities: "Calcific densities" in the kidneys usually represent calcifications or stones, depending on any other associated findings they may have mentioned. Sometimes kidney tumorsay calcify, but they would have mentioned any finding concerning for this. Cysts are very common, and if they meet certain well-defined criteria (bozniak classification), they are usually benign and need no further follow up. ...Read more

What does: Septated upper pole right renal cyst. Right kidney contains multi septated cyst, 4.5cm in size. May contain punctate calcification. — mean?

A single cyst: The cyst you have is not a simple cyst but a septate cyst, that means the cyst space inside is divided into multiple small spaces from by of bands of tissue. Calcification in the cysts is common from concretions from long-standing fluid inside the cysts. What is atherosclerotic vascular calcification? I have a cyst behind my left knee that is 2c by 2c by 5c.

Atherosclerosis : Atherosclerosis is buildup of cholesterol and fatty plaque in the blood vessel. However, it is not necessarily related to a patient's weight and can occur even in very thin individuals. This buildup can get calcium deposited in it as well, which makes it stiff, hence the term "hardening of the arteries". The cyst behind your knee sounds like it may be a separate issue, called a "baker's cyst". We get these cysts behind our knees for no apparent reason. They swell and sometimes can rupture. They often however cause no problem. They are usually identified on an ultrasound study. If you had worsening pain, redness, leg pain, or new symptoms then it would need to be immediately evaluated. ...Read more

I have uti's on a regular basis, I have type 2 diabetes and gave had a kidney scan which shows a cyst in one and calcification and scars on the other.

UTI prophylaxis: Recurrent utis documented by culture should be eradicated and you should discuss UTI prophylaxis, or use of a small dose of an antibiotic on a daily basis to suppress any infection. The scars concern me since any urinary tract obstruction and infection can lead to loss of kidney function. It would be highly unlikely that a simple cyst would be infected. I recommend a good talk with your doctor. ...Read more

Fna came back benign on 6mm focal coarse calcification cyst in my thyroid. Is this reliable should I get a second opinion? I'm having heart pal and hbp

Observation: A fna is never 100% certain. The probability of malignancy in a benign fna is something under 5%. However, most physicians would continue observation of the nodule rather than recommend surgery. Unless there is something wrong with your thyroid levels, it should not affect your blood pressure or cause palpitations. ...Read more

24 yrs smoking. Ct found 11x10 lobular density containing punctate calcification. Posterior lumbar subcutaneous edema. Basilar atelectatic cyst.worry?

Yes . . .: Wow, smoking since 11yo? Bottom line, if screening CT scan finds something abnormal, you need to chat w/ordering physician to discuss your options regarding next step eg how to figure out what's going on. Sometimes the radiologist will suggest repeating a scan in a specific period if it's small & indeterminate. But this again is something best discussed w/ordering physician. Best wishes! ...Read more

Doctor diagnosed 1.4 CM renal cyst. I had an ultrasound that showed a 1.4 CM renal cyst with a question of calcification in cyst wall. Now I have to get a CT scan. How bad could this be. Am scared out of my mind.

Cyst: You have a small cyst, and it is not unusual to find cyst on US. Calcification itself doesn't make it cancer. I would proceed with the CT if that what has been ordered, and then see a Urologist. Was simple or complex cyst on US? The CT should show simple vs other cyst. Best of luck. ...Read more
