I recently started to have a heated/burning sensation under my big toe. No associated pain noted. What could cause this?

Few things

Extremity-lower-foot
Could cause this. First, I would examine the skin to see if there is any sign of cracked skin, blistering or scaling as a fissure or athletes foot may be present. If not, I would question you with regards to low back pain or if you are possibly diabetic. I would also evaluate you for compression neuropathy of the deep peroneal nerve or Tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Numbing and pain in big toes and right index finger My big toes are numb and sometimes painful. Now my right index finger is starting to feel the same way. The color is normal and no flaking of skin. Should I go to my doctor?

Your

Your symptoms may reflect something called a peripheral neuropathy. This condition tends to affect the feet first but may also affect the hands. The typical symptoms include pins and needles sensation, burning, numbness, and pain. Individuals afflicted with this condition may struggle at night because of restless legs. Balance problems are also associated and can lead to falls. The causes are many and thus you need to visit your doctor so the cause can be found. Many are treatable so do not wait. Well wishes and good luck.

I am diabetic & have horrible pain in my right big toe. No swelling but the pain is very severe and keeps me from walking. Itz not gout. Any ideas?

Possibly gout

Gout
Severe pain in the big toe (assuming no traumatic causes) always makes us suspicious of gout. Being a diabetic also heightens our concern for a neuropathy. Best to see your family doctor or internist to confirm your diagnosis and to rule out diabetic causes to the pain.

Dr. James Wells answered:

Why does the top of my big toe feel like its burning?

It depends.

Cdv_photo_011
A burning sensation on the top of a big toe might have many causes. When did the burning sensation start? Is it intermittent or constant? Is there anything you have discovered that makes it worse or better? Has anything recently changed in your life with regard to medicine, diet, or exercise that might have preceded the experience of burning in your toe?

Generally when someone describes their pain the way you did, it's some type of nerve irritation. A small nerve may be running over a bony prominence and be irritated by your shoe gear, or may be caught up in other tissue. See a podiatrist for a more detailed exam and diagnosis. Treatment MAY be very simple!

Pain on the side of my big toe? Corn? Bunion?

Different

Toes
If the pain is from hard skin, you have a corn or callus. Basically they are the same tissue, with a corn being more focal and a callus, more diffuse. A bunion is the boney enlargement where the big toe and the metatarsal behind it meet. The big toe is usually leaning toward the lesser toes. If the boney lump is on the toe itself, this is an exostosis. See a podiatrist for discussion of treatment.

Have on and off again numbness in big toe since stubbing it this summer?

Trauma to nerve

Bone
When you stub your toe it is actually blunt force trauma to all the tissues in toe. The injury may not be bad enough to fracture bone but it can result in contusion-a 'deep bruise' to the soft tissues-skin muscle, tendon and nerves in the toe. Unlike the other tissues, nerve healing can take months. If the nerve was not severed, as happens in cuts to toe, the numbness should resolve.

Podiatric help:pain in my left foot of "ring" toe only?

Neuroma

Toes
A neuroma is an inflammation of the nerve in the ball of the foot. It commonly effects the nerve that supplies the 3rd and 4th toes. There are other possible causes, of course, and you should see a podiatrist for a comprehensive exam and proper diagnosis.

Dr. Payam Rafat answered:

What can cause big toe pain for 4 months?

Many possibilities

Open-uri20130331-30838-11q36b9
Your pain may be due to: trauma (fracture, sprains, arthritis), infection (ingrown toenail), metabolic conditions (gout), structural (bunion, hammertoes), or biomechanical abnormality, or nerve damage (neuropathy). A thorough history and physical exam by a professional and possibly some laboratory and radiology exams may help to determine the right cause and appropriate treatment.
