Can cold sores be spread to the genital area? Is it possible for someone with cold sores to cause genital herpes in another person?
Yes, it is possible.
Cold sores or fever blisters are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (hsv-1) and are extremely common. Most people become infected as an infant or small child when kissed or by sharing eating utensils with an adult who has the virus. 20% of the cases of genital herpes are also caused by hsv-1 thought to be infections from oral-genital contact. The virus is most contagious when someone has a cold sore, but can still be passed along by someone who does not. Many people do not even know that they are infected because the virus can "hide out" in the nerve cells for very long periods of time - for some people it hides out forever and they never get a cold sore. For others, the virus can "wake up" at any time and that's when a cold sore happens. No one knows exactly what causes a cold sore to appear - sometimes stress, illness, fevers, colds, sunlight, cold weather, menstruation, certain foods, allergies, you name it! They usually last 7-10 days and are more of an annoyance than a danger unless you have a weakened immune system or contract a bacterial infection on top of the cold sore.

Testing is important to determine the treatment and keep you and your partner safe. ...Read more
I read that baby powder with talc, can cause ovarian cancer. I used it about 20 times in my life in the genital area, about 10 years ago. What is my risk?
I doubt it: I have been following this stuff since the 1970's and I think it's junk science. Epidemiology by its nature generates an enormous amount of garbage. The claim does't make sense biologically and I am sorry it is turning out to be a money-maker for tort law. Don't worry and use cornstarch from now on. ...Read more

I have white bumps near my genital area. They look like pimples but when I try to pop them they just don't. What might cause this?
Probably normal: At your age (18) you may just be seeing the normal development of your genital area skin, especially if the bumps are on the penis or scrotum. Sebaceous and sweat glands become more prominent with sexual maturity and typically appear as white bumps, more easily visible if the skin is stretched. If in doubt, bring it up with your doctor next time you're in the office for routine care. ...Read more

My bf gave me hsv1 orally onto my vagina. Seeing as tho he already has this virus in his system can it cause him 2 get herpes on his genital area too?
Unlikely.: It is generally thought that getting herpes a second time is much harder than getting it the first time. Your BF should wear condoms, and you should both be treated with an oral antiviral (Valtrex (valacyclovir) or Famvir). ...Read more

I have interstitial cysitis and get shooting pain like shocks in pelvic area and genital area. Also well as in lower legs. Could all be caused by ic?
Consider other!: Interstitial cystitis is a problem related to the bladder and pain related to changes in the 'lining' of the bladder. I would expect this pain to be limited to the pelvic region. The comment about radiation of the pain into your legs makes me think that something else might be going on. It is okay to revisit this with a second opinion.
