Causes are overuse: of a muscle, muscle strain or simply holding a position for a prolonged period, dehydration. There may be associated inadequate blood supply, nerve compression, or mineral (potassium, calcium, magnesium) deficiency. Multifactorial: Assuming you are talking about activity related cramps, i would say that the two most likely causes are electrolyte(salts) imbalance and poor hydration. Gatorade has an excellent site for fluid replacement in relation to excercise. In general you should be drinking 64 oz of fluid per day plus 12 oz for each hour of intense exercise.
