Abrupt Lithium withdrawal caused severe akathisia symptoms. 4 months later I still experience mild symptoms. What can I do? Doctors are confused.
Get a second opinion: akathisia from drug withdrawal should, like ALL symptoms related to withdrawal, be transient and self-limited. However, I have seen many cases where such symptoms appear to persist, and it is never clear whether an underlying problems has been unmasked or it is an idiosyncratic individual response that is unusual/rare. Check for other diagnoses-eg restless leg syndrome) and treat symptomatically. ...Read more

I'm using the 20th edition of clinical handbook of psychotropic drugs published by hogrefe to review data on this. Perhaps others will have other opinions. ...Read more
Can quitting smokin cause severe akathisia/restlessness? I have been on seroquel for years and Zoloft (sertraline) for one month now. Just began to quit smoking.
Maybe: Zoloft (sertraline) and seroquel are substrates of 3a4, 2d6, and 2c19 liver enzymes. Nicotine is probably neither an inducer nor inhibitor of these cyp450 enzymes (altho it may speed up the metabolism of drugs processed by 1a2 and 2e1 enzymes). Thus your "akathisia" is probably just the result of losing the "calming" effects of the nicotine. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
