What are some ways to treat a dry hacking cough?

Diagnose first...: Before a persistent cough can be treated, you first need to know the etiology of the cough. If it is non-productive, possibilities include bronchospasm of any cause, gerd, post-nasal drip or a combination. All of these have different treatments. If the persistent cough is productive of sputum, you may have chronic bronchitis, a form of copd, again a different treatment. See doctor for diagnosis.

What's a good remedy for a dry hacking cough?

Depends on the cause: A person with a persistent dry cough can be evaluated by a doctor to see if antibiotics, asthma meds, or allergy meds are needed. Possible causes include viral or bacterial infection, the flu, mild "whooping cough", regular pneumonia, "walking pneumonia", allergic problems, asthma, etc... Sharp pains in my lower back and a dry hacking cough every nite for 5months. Back pain is in the majority of everyday. Could this problem be serious?

Should get workup: Persistent unrelanting cough should always be assessed by a physician and treated. The back pain may be related to the constant coughing. Stay away from over the counter antitussive medications. They may only perpetuate the problem. Get an appointment with a physician and you will sleep much more soundly.

2yr old has dry hacking cough, since november. Dr confirmed lungs clear. The same thing happens each year in winter. Would a humidifier help?

Yes: It sounds like your child has an irritated respiratory tract. It 's great the lungs are clear. A vaporizer or humidifier often helps in winter months when the humidity is low. Also, you may want to try a dose of Diphenhydramine at bedtime (like benadryl). If the cough continues or worsens, check back with your doctor.

My 4yo has a dry hacking cough. no fever, rash etc still eating and seems himself. but has long coughing fits intermittantly through the day and night?

Possibly Croup: Croup is a common respiratory problem in young children. It tends to occur in the fall and winter. Its main symptom is a harsh, barking cough. Croup causes swelling and narrowing in the voice box, windpipe, and breathing tubes that lead to the lungs. An attack of croup can be scary, but it is rarely serious. Children usually get better in several days with rest and care at home.

My 2 year old has a dry hacking cough when she sleeps. No stridor or wheezing. What can I do to ensure it does not turn in to something worse?

My 2 year old has a dry hacking cough when she sleeps. No stridor or wheezing. What can I do to ensure it does not turn in to something worse?

Mgt: One possible cause are allergies and another is reflux and aspiration. Post nasal drip if there is congestion usually causes a wet cough. If there is a parental history of allergies, asthma and if she has had eczema and/or allergic reactions, these may be more likely to occur.
