Causes And Symptoms Of Asthma
I woke up gasping for a breath. What could be the cause? Did experience asthma symptoms before drifting off.
Oh yes...: Exposure of the vocal cords to stomach acid ; pepsin will result in inflammation of the vocal cords (as is also often seen with acid regurgitation). Acute laryngitis may result, but watch out for chronic hoarseness, throat clearing, airway spasms, bronchitis, an asthma-type presentation, and even a higher risk of throat cancer. Impedance ph testing with a symptom diary can best characterize this. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

What causes trachea spasms (which blocks air passage) whenever coughing occurs? Is that an asthma symptom?
Age dependent: The trachea of younger kids is somewhat rubbery, like a soft silicone or thin walled plastic. It does not spasm, like the soft walls of the gut, but it can and does vibrate enough to produce some odd sounds ( the croup noise) common from ~6mo-6yr. In tracheo-malacia, ( a transient condition) the walls are much weaker and actually cave in on each other, but soft walls not spasm is the problem. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Certainly possible: Some people's asthma is triggered by allergens in the air. While you may not be allergic to the hamster itself, you may be allergic to the material in its bedding. Monitor your symptoms and see when they are worse. If it's only when cleaning the cage, you may be able to where a simple mask or try changing the bedding material. If it's bad all the time though, may want to find him a new home. ...Read more
