What could be the cause of pain at the joint of the index finger and the joints of the hand?

Arthritis: The joint at the end of the finger, closest to the nail, is a common location for osteoarthrtis. As arthritis develops the joints can swell, and bone spurs form which feel like hard bumps. Diffuse swelling about the joint is typically related to inflammation. Sometimes a more localized swelling will occur which may represent a cyst. ...Read more

There: There are a number of structures that can be cut in this area, including the skin, extensor tendon, lateral bands, saggital bands, lumbrical tendon, interosseous tendon, flexor tendon, and collateral ligaments, as well as the digital nerves. A hand surgeon can evaluate each of these structures to determine if there is a functional injury. Nerve lacerations are often best repaired soon after an injury--usually within 1-2 weeks. They can be repaired later, but then are more likely to require something to bridge the gap, such as a synthetic nerve tube. Tendon lacerations are also best repaired quickly.

While infections can occur, usually you would have increasing pain, redness, and drainage. ...Read more

I: I wonder if you had bleeding from a small blood vessel. If a small blood vessel tore, it would cause bleeding and discoloration. It sounds like there was no injury that you recall, which makes it very unusual to have the swelling or the tear in the blood vessel.

If you have this happen again or see bruising or discoloration, you should be seen and evaluated, or of course if you had any signs of infection in your hand. ...Read more
