Cause Of Vitamin K Deficiency
Diet or Antibiotics: The vast majority of our vitamin k is actually produced by symbiotic bacteria in our intestines. So, if one has recently had a bout of heavy antibiotic use (which kills off both "good and "bad" bacteria in the body), then vitamin k deficiency can result. Poor diet can also lead to this deficiency. A deficiency in vit. K most often results in easy bleeding/hemorrhage susceptibility. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Diet/ gut germs: Vitamins are something we need we can't make ourselves & for vitamin k there is a special step. Intestinal bacteria help convert ingested k precursors to the active form we need. Since newborns have no gut germs at the start, it takes a while to start the process. That is why babies get a v k shot at birth to bridge the ~ 8 days it takes for the process to kick in. ...Read more
Clotting factors: Vitamin k is used to create several factors in the clotting cascade (the system that ends in a blood clot). If vitamin k isn't there, then those factors are deficient, and blood won't clot as well. This is why newborns get a vit k shot, to avoid something called "hemorrhagic disease of the newborn.". ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Is a person with vitamin K deficiency at a lower risk for having a heart attack because he clots poorly?
Almost . . .: I can see the logic in that question, since we often prescribe mild blood-thinners (e.g., aspirin) to prevent coronary clots. However, someone with a pronounced enough vit. K deficiency to prevent coagulation may begin spontaneously hemorrhaging elsewhere (particularly in the GI tract or the brain); and if the hemodynamic state in the body is disrupted, the heart may still become ischemic. ...Read more
Has it been looked into if an abundance of vitamin K in the blood causes autism? I know the study was of a deficiency of the vitamin. Thank you.
How to say this...: I'm glad you asked the question here. In 2006, someone in the not-so-mainstream world of unproven " biomedical" cures for autism, like treating yeast , thought that giving vit k would be curative. Later, someone decided that vitamin k shots given to newborns since i-don't- know-when were a cause of autism , claiming they were dissolved in a base..Or an acid..Or both.. Get check up!: You need to go over what's happening with your doctor. It sounds like you may be having low blood pressure if this happens when you get out of bed. But i'm not sure based on the info in your question. Anytime you have ongoing dizziness, and episodes of blindness (!), you must be seen! ...Read more

Can taking alot of antibiotics permanently alter body's ability to make vitamin k and biotin in the gut, thus causing deficiency? Or can body recover?
Can recover: Body can recover from the alteration in intestinal flora caused by antibiotic treatment. In any case these two vitamins are easy to replace in case of temporary deficiency. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex. ...Read more
If your normal platelet count is at the high end of normal, could eating many veggies rich in vitamin K cause platelets to raise to 450,000 -500,000?
Veggies raising plat: Very unlikely that your platelets are increased due to eating vegetables. Platelets are also acute phase reactants.. Meaning they may be transient high due to a minor infection or inflammation. Repeat platelet count after 3-4 weeks. If high may need further workup for thrombocytosis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

I understand that the IV administration of Vitamin K can cause anaphylaxis? Could this happen if the IV administration of Vitamin K is only 1 mg?
Why does antiphospholipid syndrome cause shortness of breath, & why does eating leafy greens that contain vitamin K amplify the shortness of breath?
Antiphospholipid: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common in aps & pulmonary embolism, a common cause of shortness of breath (sob) is seen in 1/3 of aps patients w/ dvt. Pulmonary arterial thrombosis +/- thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension is common in aps & leads to sob. Classically treated with a vit-k antagonist anti-coagulant. Vit k can counter effect of this medication. ...Read more
