Woke up with a sharp pain in my ankle joint. I could wiggle my toes but could not move my ankle in any direction. Pain went away in about 10 min.why?

Possibly: I would recommend an x-ray of the area by either a podiatrist or orthopedic foot specialist. The injured area should be treated according to the findings. If not broken and treatment does not resolve the pain and swelling then i would recommend an MRI study. ...Read more

Shouldn't be walking: If you have a torn ligament then your foot should be in a brace or a cast until you are seen by an orthopedic surgeon. Keep the foot at a 90 degree angle constantly gives it a better chance of holding together and healing. This cannot be accomplished without some external structure. ...Read more

Achilles tendinitis: This could be achilles tendinitis ( an inflammation of the tendon in the back of the ankle that promotes ankle plantar flexion(pushing down against the ground to push off to walk). If inflamed it will hurt with walking and running. Relative rest and the use of tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain and Motrin for decreasing the inflammation.
