My sister is a patient of als, she is taking rilutek (riluzole) tablet.is there any other treatment of this disease?
Unfortunately no: Due to concern regarding glutamate toxicity, other meds have been added on occasion, such as gabapentin, memantine, Lyrica, (pregabalin) but little proof these provide additional value to the riluzole, which remains the main FDA approved chemical. Just a theoretical long-shot, and not researched at all, but the medical food MetanX and vitamin D-3 supplements might be considered. ...Read more

Could consider trying Alpha lipoid acid, phosphatidyl serine, or even n-acetyl cysteine. Would contact major medical school centers such as mayo, johns hopkins to join research. ...Read more

I'd consider researching on the internet if there are any clinical trials pending and if she can enroll. My only disclaimer is that if she enrolls in a clinical trial, her treatment will be experiment or she may be in a placebo group. ...Read more
