Hi there. I just want to know if it's ok to take my off brand 24 hour allergy meds with my other meds. I'm taking bystolic, cymbalta, elavil, flexeril?

Soon starting amitriptyline 10mg for migraine. Also frequently use Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for allergies. Safe if taken a few hrs apart?
Yes, if prescribed: This low dose of amitriptylene may help prevent migraines, but may have some sedation & constipation with it. Best to take it at night. You might consider other, newer options for allergies that aren't as sedating as Benadryl (diphenhydramine) -- especially when added to amitriptylene. Discuss with your doctor, who knows you best.. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Possible: It is certainly possible and thus stopping the drug for 1-2 weeks would be the prudent approach especially when the drug is not a life-sustaining one. If the problem does not go away or improve significantly after 2 wks, will have to look for other reasons. ...Read more

I was put on elavil (amitriptyline) for interstitial cystitis but i read that it causes retention. Why would i be on this medicine then?
Elavil (amitriptyline): Elavil (amitriptyline) at low doses can be helpful in chronic pain conditions like interstitial cystitis. It's true that Elavil (amitriptyline) also has strong anticholinergic properties that can lead to urinary retention, constipation, etc. This doesn't usually happen at the low doses used to symptomatically help interstitial cystitis. Please discuss this with your own physician. Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Possibly: Each person is unique with regard to clinical response and development of side effects to medications. If you have developed "brain fog" after starting elavil, (amitriptyline) it is important to talk with your doctor about this. Often early side effects resolve after about 7-14 days, but if it is not tolerable in the meantime, you may need a change of medication. ...Read more
Would taking 10mg a night of elavil (amitriptyline) cause rapid hr or dangerous heart rhythm, or is this more likely only at higher doses? Need it for migraine.
Taking anything else: If this is all that you are taking it is still possible but unlikely. However, if you are on other medications or over the counter medications even supplements or herbs or homeopathic items , then the risk increases. Best to discuss with whomever is prescribing the elavil (amitriptyline). If you are taking other things then an interaction profile can be done e.g.; epocratesonline is one and there are others. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
