Should I worry about contracting rabies, after a cat got playful and scratched me? It wasn't foaming at the mouth or acting strange. Looked healthy.

Should I worry about contracting rabies, after a cat got playful and scratched me? It wasn't foaming at the mouth or acting strange. Looked healthy.

Highly unlikely!: Once you've seen a rabid animal, you will know that there is nothing "playful" about them. It is true that in cats rabies can develop slowly, but even early on cats get more aggressive, or shy or restless & disinterested in play. HOWEVER, rabies can only be transmitted by a BITE rather than a scratch, since the virus is found in saliva. In addition, all pets MUST be vaccinated against rabies. I ...Read more

Unlikely: Having 2 previous rabies shots in the past 2 years, likely makes your cat safe. I hope he/she is a domestic cat and lives in doors. If he/she is a normal behaving cat and there was a scrape and no bleeding there is also minimal risk. All the best. ...Read more

Stuck finger in friends dogs cage/ not a nice dog but has shots and he went to bite but I moved. Felt his teeth/mouth graze finger. No bite. Rabies?

Chances VERY low : If no break in the skin, not much chance of infection without it. However, the virus that causes rabies is found in saliva of the animal--if hands were washed well with soap and water--still very low risk. Better to question motive: why stick fingers in caged animal's reach--especially one that doesn't know/like you. You were lucky this time... ...Read more
