How long do you keep a cast on for a sprained ankle?

How long do you keep a cast on for a sprained ankle?

Variable: If your sprain was bad enough to be in a cast and not in a boot I would leave it on for 2-3 weeks. Removal of the cast will allow range of motion but it would still need to be protected either w/ crutches a boot or ankle brace.
If we can allow range of motion and protect from additional injury we can heal the ankle up faster. Re injury early on is a real possibility and needs to be protected. ...Read more

I am in an air cast for an ankle sprain. All its doing is causing swelling and pain. Could I juat wear and ankle brace instead?

Possibly: If it is just an ankle sprain, and definitely not a fracture immobilization is not required definitively. The main purpose would be to provide support and aid in your function. So if the air cast is not helping, you could certainly try it without anything or go to a soft brace. Check with your doctor first as I don't know the specifics of the injury, but you don't have to immobilize a sprain. ...Read more

Depends: It depends on how your ankle feels. Early mobilization of ankle sprains reduces the duration of symptoms. If you are able to walk on your ankle with minimal discomfort you might try forgoing the splint.
