Cardiac Catheterization (Overview)

This is a procedure where narrow, flexible tubes are inserted into a peripheral artery through a cut in the skin, and advanced to the heart. Dye can be injected through the catheters into the arteries of the heart to look for blockages ("angiogram"), or to measure pressure within the cardiac chambers ("right heart cath"). Arteries can be opened with balloons/stents at the same time if blocked.

What is cardiac catheterization?

What is cardiac catheterization?

Tubes & X-Ray Info: A tube in inserted via a peripheral artery &/or vein, passed through the vessel to the heart arteries & into &/or through the heart chambers to measure pressure, blood flow &/or "see blood" via dye injected into the blood flowing through artery (s) &/or vein (s) near/around heart. Dye in the blood makes blood column show on X-Ray for a few seconds to see outline of artery &/or heart chamber opening.

What is a cardiac catheterization?

What is a cardiac catheterization?

Diagnose ; treat: A cardiac catheterization is test done in an special x-ray suite (catheterization laboratory) where long, thin, flexible tubes are directed to the heart through veins and/or arteries to diagnose and treat various forms of heart disease. In the best hands, this is an important tool with valuable results and low risks.

Why is cardiac catheterization done?

Why is cardiac catheterization done?

Variety of reasons: Cardiac catheterization is performed to assist in the diagnosis of a wide variety of heart problems. Measurements are made of pressure, blood flow, and oxygen saturation in the heart. X-ray dye is injected and pictures taken of the arteries and chambers of the heart. Based on the information obtained, a treatment plan is developed.

Is cardiac catheterization intrusive?

Is cardiac catheterization intrusive?

Yes: It's an invasive procedure in which a catheter (small tube) is inserted in an artery (blood vessel) in your wrist or groin, then fed backwards to your heart in order to take pictures of the heart arteries.

What is cardiac catheterization help?

What is cardiac catheterization help?

Its diagnostic: Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic test to evaluate pts with coronary artery blockages, valve disease, congenital heart problems etc. From there the operator determines if surgery or stenting etc is needed. Its very accurate but is invasive.

What does a cardiac catheterization do?

What does a cardiac catheterization do?

Takes a picture: Cardiac catheterization is used to take a picture of the arteries of the heart, the pumping chambers of the heart, the valves of the heart, and to make hemodynamics measurements regarding the function of the heart.

Can you describe cardiac catheterization?

Can you describe cardiac catheterization?

See Below: Usually, sedation is given - a 2mm incision is made in the femoral artery at the groin, a sheath is inserted, the artery is cannulated with a catheter, dye is injected via catheter to provide contrast so that the cardiologist can read the images via fluoroscopy (x-ray).The injection of dye is repeated to attain images of the heart from enough angles to provide a complete 'picture' of coronaries.

What is a double cardiac catheterization?

Double catheterization: We don't use that terminology but perhaps you mean a right and left heart catheterization.

How intrusive is cardiac catheterization?

How intrusive is cardiac catheterization?

Somewhat: Intrusive? Well it usually involves putting a large bore needle into your femoral artery - however if you can benefit from it (because you can stent arteries open during the same procedure) it is less intrusive than open heart surgery but more intrusive than having a stress test or doing nothing (and maybe dying at home).

How long does cardiac catheterization last?

How long does cardiac catheterization last?

Depends: The length of time to perform a cardiac catheterization depends on many variables. Often, for a straightforward case, the waiting and preparation take longer than the diagnostic procedure - which can take as little as 15 minutes. If access is difficult or the anatomy tortuous, it can take much longer.

What is a cardiac catheterization procedure?

What is a cardiac catheterization procedure?

Multiple Aspects: A catheterization can be both diagnostic (i.e. Determine information) and therapeutic (i.e. Treat disease). A catheter is like a long iv. Catheters are inserted into arteries and/or veins and threaded up into your heart. Some catheters measure pressure (unique to cath), other's inject dye for pictures, and yet others have balloons and stents to treat diseases.

What are cardiac catheterization procedures?

What are cardiac catheterization procedures?

Catheterization: The procedure involves sliding catheters through your blood vessels to the heart. The catheters are used to measure pressures, take samples, inject dye for imaging and other purposes. When imaging is performed with cath we call it angiography. Often they go together.

What purpose does cardiac catheterization serve?

What purpose does cardiac catheterization serve?

Cath: This test allows your doctor to visualize the coronary arteries (blood flow to your heart), and take pressure measurements in the chambers of your heart in order to determine if there are problems. If a blockage is found in an artery, then it can be fixed with a stent via catheterization.

15
Is cardiac catheterization covered by insurance?

Depends: This depends completely on your insurance, deductible, co-pays, co-insurance, and maximum out of pocket. This question is best directed to your insurance company. Also, your cardiologist will be required to attain an authorization from your insurance for any elective procedure, such as a cath. The hospital attains authorizations for emergent procedures.

Who are candidates for a cardiac catheterization?

Who are candidates for a cardiac catheterization?

Diagnosis/treatment: Candidates for cardiac catheterization include 1) a patient in whom additional information is required to make a diagnosis, or 2) the diagnosis is known but detailed anatomical information is required to determine the appropriate type of therapy.

What are the expenses of cardiac catheterization?

What are the expenses of cardiac catheterization?

Multiple: The cardiac catheterization is a costly procedure. The breakdown of the fees apply to physician services, hospital charges for the use of equipent and staff (usually a nurse and 2-3 technicians) and then teh preparatory care as well as the post procedural care. There are included charges for the catheters. Once theser are added up the charges can total in the tens of thousands of dollars.

What are complications of cardiac catheterization?

What are complications of cardiac catheterization?

Multiple: Principal complications are stroke, myocardial infarction, death, bleeding, and infection. The risks of stroke, mi, death, and infection are one in 1000. The risk of bleeding at the puncture site is approximately 1 in 100. If an angioplasty or stent is performed, the risks are higher.
