What is the difference between ferrous sulfate & chelated iron?

What is the difference between ferrous sulfate & chelated iron?

Iron supplements: Chelated iron has been treated to bind it to an amino acid, supposedly to make it more like that occurring naturally in foods. It allegedly is more easily absorbed through cell walls. Ferrous sulfate is the most common & cheapest iron supplement but may not be well tolerated. Ferrous fumarate is better absorbed, but heme iron polypeptide is well tolerated & absorbed. Vitamin c enhances iron uptake. ...Read more

What is the difference between ferrous sulfate iron and chelated iron?

What is the difference between ferrous sulfate iron and chelated iron?

Iron: Ferrous sulfate is also known as iron. You can use this as a supplement if your iron level is low- as a treatment for iron deficiency.
Iron chelating agent- on the other hand- is used to bind the iron in your blood and then remove it from your body. This will be used if your iron level is too muc/highh- for instance in the setting where you received multiple blood transfusion. ...Read more

I am completely finished with my RX iron 325 mg, but need more. Will the same strength OTC non-RX iron (ferrous sulfate) work just the same? Yes? No?

I am completely finished with my RX iron 325 mg, but need more. Will the same strength OTC non-RX iron (ferrous sulfate) work just the same? Yes? No?

Depending on the: Level of iron deficiency anemia you have, you would need between 160 mg to 480 mg of iron sulfate (there are other compounds) daily. Your body can only absorb so much through the gut before inducing side effects. Most OTC iron preparations are between 5 mg to 65 mg, so likely you would have to take a lot of pills to make up for the deficiency. The key is to have regular checkup to see progress ...Read more

How many 25 mg iron bisglycinate capsules should be taken to equal 325 mg ferrous sulfate?

How many 25 mg iron bisglycinate capsules should be taken to equal 325 mg ferrous sulfate?

Slight difference: The iron bisglycinate is different form of iron from ferrous sulfate but when studies have been done there is not that much difference in the outcomes but the studies vary a great deal. Some studies show half the amount equals the ferrous sulfate so 175 mg of iron bisglycinate could do the same as 325mg of ferrous sulfate. However both will help iron deficiency. This not proven standard. Hope help ...Read more

I was prescribed 325 mg ferrous sulfate. My ferritin was at a 12 yet all other numbers were within normal range. Is this too much iron?

No: Your ferritin level indicates iron deficiency at the time of the test. Women keep losing iron with the menstrual bleeding and it would not do any harm to keep taking supplemental iron while you are having periods. ...Read more

CBC was ok. Day later drew a "full iron panel" (what's that & why check?) & said my iron levels were very low & put me on ferrous sulfate 325 mg.

Iron deficiency: Most of the time iron deficiency is detected when the CBC is abnormal. However, some cases may still show numbers in the normal range, but tending towards a pattern consistent with iron deficiency. If the iron, iron binding and serum ferritin (panel) all point to deficiency then treatment is good. But should also ask why iron is low. ...Read more

Can iron suppliment like ferrous sulfate make u feel lazy? I am taking this supplement because I have been diagnosed with iron defeciency.

Not usually: Anemia from iron deficiency can cause fatigue, but ferrous sulfate usually does not. The most common side effects are an upset stomach or constipation. Certain other medical conditions can problems with iron overload, but if you are othewise healthy, and are taking the appropriate dose, this is unlikely. If the problem persists, follow-up with your doctor for advise. ...Read more

My doctor told me to take 325mg ferrous sulfate 2x day for anemia. I bought carbonyl iron. Should I adjust my dosage if at all?

My doctor told me to take 325mg ferrous sulfate 2x day for anemia. I bought carbonyl iron. Should I adjust my dosage if at all?

Why anemia?: Ibuprofen may cause gastritis. Why are you anemic? Menstrual blood loss needs to replace iron in blood lost during menses. Blood in stool? Not familiar with carbonyl iron--what is the brand? Iron should not be taken with milk or milk products within hour of milk meal, as this decreases iron absorption. My favorite iron brand is Vitron C--causes less stomach symptoms. ...Read more

What does it mean when you have a gray stool? I take 325mg daily of ferrous sulfate (iron) so the stool is usually black. It has been gray for about a week.

Good: Good news! The only stool colors we get really concerned about are red (blood from colon), black (blood from small intestine or stomach), or white (liver is not working well). And in your case since you take iron, black stool would be expected and not worrisome. Colors such as brown, yellow, orange, green, gray, even blue (blue kool-aid or blueberries) or purple (beets) can all be normal and usually associated with diet. If you have a persistent change in your stool habits, you should contact your physician since this could be a sign of an underlying disorder, but a short period of strange stools that are not red, black or white is usually of no concern. ...Read more

Blood transfusion 2 days ago (2 bags). Iron Ref. Range: 50-170 Mine was 11. Doc put me on Ferrous Sulfate 5gr Tab twice a day. Is this dose safe?

Yes: Your question initially confused me, as gr is not an abbreviation we see very often any longer. The typical tablet size of ferrous sulfate is 325 mg; in the old days this was also described as "5 grains (gr)". That tablet size twice daily is perfectly appropriate. ...Read more
