2nd grade ankle sprain. Limped around from day 1 and continued to let ankle bear weight. Now, 5th week, still have pain walking. What should I do now?
Ankle sprain: After the initial sprain, during the acute phase your physician should have recommended rice (rest, ice, compression, elevation). After a couple of weeks, after the swelling goes down, it is very important to strengthen the ligaments by intense physical therapy. If pain persists you may need to see your physician for other treatment options such as a corticosteroid injection and a supportive device. ...Read more
I turned my ankle tumbling and its swelled, minorly bruised and I can't bear weight. What grade ankle sprain is this?
Seek Examination: Unfortunately, your condition requires further examination. A clinical examination correlated with x-rays are needed to determine your ankle sprain grade if you have, in fact, actually sprained your ankle. For now, rest, ice, elevate and protect the extremity until you are able to see your doctor. ...Read more
I got a grade 2 ankle sprain 16 days ago. I can bear weight painless. But when I try to step I feel much pain in my left back of heel. When can I walk?
4 weeks post Grade 2/3 High ankle sprain, still on crutches unable to bear weight, Does this seem normal? Already received MRI and did extensive damage
Normal: Sprain are actually harder and longer to heal than fractures. Sprains are ruptured muscle fibers that bleed into the belly of the sprained muscle and cause swelling and pain. The problem is that in order to heal, the muscle can't be totally immobilized as can a bone (i.e. via cast or fixation). It will take time. ...Read more
Ankle sprain occurred 12 days ago but still cannot walk or bear weight on it. I have been using crutches and attempting to walk on it but it gives out?
Ankle injury: I would definitely have that foot evaluated by a physician. You could have sustained a fracture. Also, you may require a cast or boot to stabilize the ankle while it heals. Otherwise you may continue to injure an already injured ankle. Not being able to bear weight is concerning. If there is significant swelling I would seek help as soon as possible. ...Read more
I had an ankle sprain but I am fine now interma of ability to bear weight etc. My dpm suggests a surgery saying it is needed to avoid djd. Should I?
Ankle surgery: Surgery to stabilize a joint has not been shown to change the rate of osteoarthritis. If you have the surgery it should be to prevent instability episodes in the future. If you have fully rehabilitated the ankle it may no longer be unstable. Instability is a functional loss of control of joint stabilization. Having looseness on examination (laxity) is not the same as functional instability. ...Read more
I sprained my ankle two days ago falling off a tremill and there's no swelling or brusing but I cant bear weight?
RICE: Yes. You should start with rice as a home treatment. After 48-72 hours you may switch to heat (instead of ice). As your pain starts to subside you may add stretching as tolerated, and massage. Once pain is gone, then gently return to activity as your strength and proprioception may need time to recovery after the injury, and you don't want to further injure yourself by going "all out" too fast. ...Read more
I've had an ankle sprain for 10 days. I've put on an extra 3kg of weight since. Is it good for me to fast to loose weight since I can't exercise?
To me there are 2 issues:
1) you may need to eat slightly less due to less activity but too much fasting may deprive your body of the nutrients it needs to heal your ankle.
2) you may need to get your ankle examined to make sure nothing else going on apart from a sprain if you are still troubled.
For both issues seeing a doctor licensed in your area will be able to give you specific advice. ...Read more

OTC Ankle brace: You're better off using an otc brace or splint that trying to tape yourself up at home. It's not as easy as the professional trainers make it look. You could also just see a podiatrist - many of us stock simple braces for simple sprains. These will protect the ligaments of the ankle - that's what they are designed for. ...Read more

What is worse: an ankle sprain, tendon tear or ligament tear? I cant walk after 2 weeks on "sprained ankle" and am scared of diagnosis
See your doctor: An ankle sprain is graded on severity and symptoms. The inability to walk two weeks after an ankle sprain is concerning. Even in mild sprains, you do tear part of the ligament. In more severe sprains, more of the ligament is torn. It's possible you could have injured more than one ligament, the cartilage, or the bone which is not allowing you to walk. I recommend you see your doctor right away ...Read more

Ankle sprain 9 months back. Pain on weight bearing aftr 10 minutes despite continuous physiotherapy & bracing. Mri says a torn lig with a partial torn lig?
I had an ankle sprain two months ago. Now I am having pain in p tibial. I have been wearing inflatable stirrup ankle brace for five weeks. The doctor said I should continue wearing itbut the physio said ditch. Who's right?
Depends: Does the brace relieve symptoms? The brace is not a substitute for rehab. Typically, I utilize more functional braces that are often smaller and utilize velcro or laces. The stirrup splint can be too restrictive once in the final recovery stages. It's not a very functional brace during athletic participation either. If you mean posterior tib tendonitis, there are braces made specifically for this. ...Read more
How long will I be out of sports with either a grade 2 or 3 ankle sprain and two nondisplaced fibula fractures (I hurt my ankle 4wks ago; I'm 17 yrs)?
Minimally 12 weeks: Without a complete history of your injury and sports activity, the non-displaced fractures will take a minimum of 6-8 weeks to heal (assuming there are no complications in healing) and in general soft tissue injuries such as the an ankle sprain will be longer about 12 weeks (= 3 months). Again, that is assuming that you are compliant with treatment regimen prescribed by your doctor. ...Read more

Ankle sprain/avulsion fractured talus - 1 wk later still slight swelling, pain if bearing weight - foot turns purple & throbs when standing. Normal?
Ankle Injury: If you have an avulsion fracture of the talus it depends on the size of the avulsion. Not seeing your xray it is tough to recommend treatment. However, you need to get on crutches and be non weight bearing. When you stand the swelling has nowhere to go and stays in your foot. That's why elevation above the heart is essential. Also ice the ankle when you get the swelling down and keep it elevated. ...Read more

I am casted for a ankle sprain/and two minor fibula fractures. My foot isn't sore, so does that mean I can play sports as soon as my cast is gone?
Post injury rehab: Just as important as the treatment or surgery is the rehab of the extremity. The isolation of the part will weaken the muscles and hurt your balance. Several weeks to months of physical therapy often done to help bring you back to normal, and, even then, you'll have to ease back into the sport or activity or risk reinjury of the area (s). ...Read more
