How to take care of a canker sore under my tongue?

Time & Ointments: Canker sores are caused for unkown reasons and cold sores are caused from a viral infection. Both can look the same, but size and location can distinguish them. In a healthy individual, they usually go away in 10-14 days. You can go to a drugstore and check for different ointments that may help with the sensitivity. Salt water rinses 5-6x/day may help some too. ...Read more

The sores will usually heal within 10 to 14 days, without treatment. There are special rinses that contain anesthetic solutions that can help with the pain. Avoid spicy and acidic food. Is it safe to order silver nitrate sticks online and apply it to a canker sore under my tongue without going to the dentist?

Is it safe to order silver nitrate sticks online and apply it to a canker sore under my tongue without going to the dentist?

Not good idea: I suppose you could do that, but i would not advise it. Silver nitrate sticks work well for active bleeding, but likely would not do much more that make this sore hurt more and possibly delay healing.Better to rinse with salt water. You can apply orajel to the area for comfort while eating if needed. Dry with cotton tip and apply. Anything stronger and you risk increased irritation. ...Read more

However, many over the counter antiseptic and pain-relief medications can ameliorate pain, prevent infection and promote healing. ...Read more

It looks like I have a canker sore on my frenulum (or at least I think that's what it's called), the strip right under my tongue. Is this possible?

Yes: It's possible and very painful. Canker sores go away within 7-10 days. There are no very effective treatments that I've come across (and I've tried them all on myself and my patients!). It's worth trying anbesol or other treatments to see if they might help you but don't be surprised if they don't. The sores will go away on their own. ...Read more
