May be viral: If there is a single sore and you have no other symptoms (no headache, no stomach ache, no fever), the sore throat may well be a virus. Treatment for that is supportive. Depends: The herpes appears in very specific locations and has specific appearance. Not likely mistaken for a zit. Inside the mouth it will be found on the tissues immediately next to the teeth and also on the palate. Outside the mouth, most commonly around the mouth, and under the nose.
