Dry, rough hoarse throat for 4wks. Dr says no candida etc. No lymph up. Slight chesty cough. White spots deep one tonsil and one red patch. Scared!

Post-nasal drainage: Your symptoms are probably just due to some post-nasal drainage which can cause throat pain/irritation and cough. Red and white sports on tonsils are not too concerning. The white spot is likely debris (called a tonsillolith). They are annoying but not dangerous. The red patch is probably from irritation from the drainage. Try antihistamine or steroid nose spray. ...Read more

Can my neck lymph node infection have anything to do with my thyroid nodule?

Can my neck lymph node infection have anything to do with my thyroid nodule?

Thyroid nodule: Lymph nodes in the neck frequently swell and then regress during minor viral illnesses. So this may have nothing to do with a thyroid nodule. However, that thyroid nodule should be worked up. Ideally with an ultrasound-directed biopsy and you should be seen by an endocrinologist. A thyroid cancer can spread to lymph nodes, although the more likely explanation is a virus. ...Read more

The ultrasound of the thyroid showed enlarged lymph nodes near neck area. What could this possibly be?

The ultrasound of the thyroid showed enlarged lymph nodes near neck area. What could this possibly be?

Hard to say.: It depends on how large the lymph nodes are, whether or not they are tender and how long they have been present. Tender, enlarged lymph nodes can be seen with viral or bacterial infections or inflammation. Non-tender enlarged nodes which don't go away after a month or two should be further investigated with MRI or ct and possible needle biopsy as they could indicate a more serious problem. ...Read more

I'm curious as to what does it mean if an ultrasound of the thyroid has enlarged lymph nodes at the neck area?

I'm curious as to what does it mean if an ultrasound of the thyroid has enlarged lymph nodes at the neck area?

May not be serious: It depends on several things: how large are they? The larger they are the more concerning. Are they tender? If so, they are probably from infection or inflammation, rather than cancer. Enlarged, non-tender lymph nodes in the neck which don't go away are cause for concern and should be sampled with a needle biopsy which can be done with ultrasound guidance. ...Read more

Enlarged thyroid, or just swollen lymph nodes in the neck? How do you tell the difference?

Enlarged thyroid, or just swollen lymph nodes in the neck? How do you tell the difference?

Depends on location: The thyroid gland resides at the base of the neck on both sides of the trachea (cartilage-encased breathing tube). The neck lymph nodes that can swell up are typically found under the angle of the jaw, directly under the chin, and along the mid neck (along the carotid arteries). A physical exam or ultrasound exam by your doctor can help you distinguish these possibilities. ...Read more
