Candida Leaky Gut Diet
No: People don't eat gluten, they ear foods that contain gluten. These are grains, which contain some poorly digestible carbohydrates. Bacteria in the gut ferment these, can cause gas, bloat, pain, diarrhea- similar to symptoms of celiac sprue gluten bowel disease. The latter is immune related, the former is digestive. Important distinction re: diagnosis, and rx. Celiac lifelong exclusion;. ...Read more
refers to all the physical matter humans (like all living creatures) must take in on a recurring basis; only partially for energy. Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Intestinal lining cells replaced ~every 3 days. CaPO4 in bones ~every 6 years, ...Read more
Is there a relationship between allergies, autism, leaky gut syndrome, candida, intestinal flora and antibiotics?
For some yes : For some children all of those things play a role in exacerbating symptoms and can be seen more frequently in a child who had many infections and antibiotics starting at a young age. Antibiotics kill the good as well as the bad bacteria in our guts and can disrupt the balance and lead to dysbiosis and inflammation which can be precursor for leaky gut and allergies. This is not specific to autism. ...Read more
Does the "beneficial bacteria" in yogurt kill candida albicans overgrowth in your intestinal tract?
Candidal overgrowth: This urban myth has not been scientifically proven, but it has not been disproved. The "balance" between bacterial flora and yeast cells in the intestinal tract (colon) is generally regulated by what you eat. If you choose to add unpasteurized yogurt to your diet it may well change the character of your stools, since it contains lactobacilli. Same available as a probiotic for oral use. ...Read more
I am suffering from candida overgrowth, this has caused gluten and dairy intolerance. Will having healthy gut flora fix my intolerances?
No: Lactobacillus species are in cultured unpasteurized yogurt. In your gut you have hundreds or thousands of different organisms all in competition with each other, including candida. When the relative numbers of these are disturbed the candida can be there in greater number & more likely to produce infection elsewhere. The lactobacilli may, by competition, decrease the number of candida. ...Read more
Not very much: The fodmap elimination diet is designed for people with irritable bowel syndrome (ibs). It's goal is to reduce sugars and short-chain carbohydrates in the diet. The major overlap is with wheat as most of the other foods avoided in this diet are fruit & vegetables that are not common food allergy offenders. ...Read more
Candida albicans: Some feel that high sugar meals promote Candida Albicans growth. This means sweets like cakes, cookies, candy, processed breads, etc. Using whole grain flour may help a little with this because the sugar would be delivered a little more slowly to your system, but it is still sugar. High sugar fruits (pineapple, papaya, etc) might be seen this way also. ...Read more

Diagnosed w/ small bowel bacteria overgrowth and carb intolerance (secondary). What could cause each?
They are related: Sibo or small intestine bacterial overgrowth is a result of a multitude of things, det included. Carbohydrates, including fruits and grains feed the bacteria in the gut and causing the bacteria to grow in abundance. This then interferes with the digestive process and this leads to fermentation of certain foods (carbs)- causing gas, bloating, etc. Seek a functional medicine md to "heal your gut". ...Read more
Can sibo cause fructose malabsorption? Meaning, if the sibo is cured could it improve fructose malabsorption?
Maybe, but...: Malabsorption is complex and may reflect bacterial fermentation from sibo, small bowel inflammation or mucosal disease (lots of causes), GI transit issues, pancreatic enzyme activity and sufficiency, etc. A fructose re-trial on your part after sibo eradication may be worthwhile. ...Read more
I'm skinny until today. Is bad bacteria damage intestines cause nutrient malabsorption? Can probiotics absorb nutrients and therefore gain weight?
Variable per person: Your question is excellent, but the response is individualized based on a patient's goals with probiotics. GI transit time, diet, use of probiotics, co-morbidities that may require use of antibiotics or other medications that affect gut flora, as well as the underlying pathology found in the gut may all alter benefit. Typically your "back to normal" in 3-4 days w/lots of probiotics to choose from. ...Read more
Can a salmonella infection lead to the development, over the years, of alcohol intolerance and IBS / leaky gut? is low FODMAP diet a good solution?
No difference in Rx: A very recent research study found that people who had been infected with the intestinal parasite Giardia had an elevated risk of irritable bowel sundrome. Maybe other intestinal infections like shigellosis can do the same. However, it probably makes no differenence i how IBS should be treated. This is something to discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
