Can there be any other way of finding out if I have cancer, blood test maybe?

Can there be any other way of finding out if I have cancer, blood test maybe?

No: There is not a single blood test that can detect solid organ malignancy (pancreatic, breast, lung...Etc) with certainty. The exception to this role is hematologic malignancies (leukemia/lymphoma). There are several blood tests that we use to look for surrogates of cancer that include what we call tumor markers but those are complimentary and for monitoring disease status rather than diagnosis. ...Read more

Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

I am 39 f. I had a early cdt lung cancer blood test. I am a ex smoker. Quit 2yrs ago. My magea4 came back positive. Ct of chest clear. Investigate?

The blood test is: Bogus. It is not part of my work up. You are too young to qualify for ct screening. It is too bad you waited to 42 to quit, but it is great that you did. Find another medical group. ...Read more

Should i be concerned about a positive mage a 4 test? Mage= melenoma antigen gene? I had early cdt lung cancer blood test. Ct of lungs clear

MAGE A4 Tesring : The mage a4 antigen, even though it was named the melanoma associated antigen, is a non-specific antigen that has been linked to a wide variety of tumors. It's efficacy is still being debated as a stand alone predictor. Your physician should investigate and rule out the most likely malignancies for your age and family history, including early breast and oral cancer, as well as others less likely. ...Read more

Upper back pain since last may.Dr ordered CT of chest. It was clear. Also took early cdt lung cancer blood test the magea4 was positive. Worry?

Upper back pain since last may.Dr ordered CT of chest. It was clear. Also took early cdt lung cancer blood test the magea4 was positive. Worry?

What for?: Mage a4 is not an approved screening test for lung cancer, was this done as part of a research trial? Lung cancer in a 39 year old with a clean ct chest would be very unusual, and in a person with very low risk of cancer any screening test that is positive is most likely a false positive. I would suggest discussing the purpose of the test and results with the doctor who ordered it! ...Read more

I'm 33 - smoker - family history of cancer - Had blood test all normal but CEA 5.4 - creatinine 0.6 - monocytes 9% . Could I have cancer?

I'm 33 - smoker - family history of cancer - Had blood test all normal but CEA 5.4 - creatinine 0.6 - monocytes 9% . Could I have cancer?

Why were you tested?: CEA is a poor screening test in people without symptoms or signs of cancer. And reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthy folks fall outside on either end. This is very slightly above reference range and not uncommon for a smoker. Please try to stop and ask your physician whether chest imaging and/or colonoscopy are in order. ...Read more

My sister is on chemotherapy (folfox for metastatic colon cancer). Recent blood test shows high WBC (14, 000) and platelets (429). Is this okay?

No worries.: High WBC can be due to many causes: infection, stress, steroid use, dehydration, or the use of growth factor (such as neupogen). If there is no evidence of infection, then there is nothing to worry about. High platelet count is not uncommon since it is a body's reaction to stress of any cause (platelet is an acute phase reactant). Again, nothing to worry about. All the best, hk. ...Read more

X ray of broken bone showed hole in bone biopsy done and was neg for bone cancer. Recent blood test showed low white blood count. Reason for concern?

Evaluation warranted: Depending on how low the white count, it would be wise to continue to be followed by a primary health care provider and/or hematologist. It will likely return to normal, but it should be followed. ...Read more

Will you determine if someone has cancer through a blood test?

No: No. First, cancer is not one disease. There are may different cancers for every part of the body. Second, all of the blood tumor markers we have are very non-specific; many other conditions besides cancer can falsely elevate them. Talk to your doctor about any symptoms that you are concerned about. ...Read more

Is it possible to find cervical cancer through a blood test?

Is it possible to find cervical cancer through a blood test?

Mostly no: There are no reliable blood markers for cervical cancer. The tumor marker ca125 is often an indicator of ovarian cancer, but it is not very sensitive and not very specific. It is used as a screening test in some circumstances, and to follow the effects of therapy when it has been documented to be high at the start. There are no blood markers that are good for endometrial cancer, either. ...Read more

Can a doctor determine if I have cancer with a blood test?

Basically no: We all wish it were that easy. The leukemias usually show on a complete blood count. Tumor markers are poor screening tools as they generate more false than true positives and the workups themselves cause health problems. Your history and physical exam and your routine cancer screening are the best we've got now. If you have a disabling fear of cancer, we can help you manage it. ...Read more
