Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Cancer antigen 125 is at the level of 55 U/ml . What does that mean ? Gyn

Cancer antigen 125 is at the level of 55 U/ml . What does that mean ? Gyn

Nonspecific: CA 125 can go up due to any peritoneal irritation. It is best not to do this test unless there is a very good reason or your doctor suspects any particular disease. Now that you have done it, it is slightly high(should be normally under 35). You may ask your doctor to recheck it in one or two months and see if it settles down or not. Then we can decide what to do about it. ...Read more

If ca19-9 within normal levels or negative, are you cancer free? Is there a test to show that you are in the % group that can't produce the antigen?

If ca19-9 within normal levels or negative, are you cancer free? Is there a test to show that you are in the % group that can't produce the antigen?

Misconception: Only a handful of cancers produce ca19-9, and even then it's won't be detectable at a significant level unless there's enough mass of the cancer to produce it. This is not a screening test. If levels drop to undetectable after surgery, it's no guarantee of a cure. It's most useful to follow and watch for recurrences of a known ca19-9 producing cancer. ...Read more

If you had to name one or 2 monitoring blood tests for pancreatic cancer would you include carbohydrate antigen 19-9 even with its false positives?

If you had to name one or 2 monitoring blood tests for pancreatic cancer would you include carbohydrate antigen 19-9 even with its false positives?

Monitoring not Dx: There are number of chemicals associated with pancreatic cancer. None of these is good for making a diagnosis, but may be used to monitor the progress of disease. However even for that the role is limited due to other issues affecting levels of these markers, including CA 19-9. I'd like the medical oncologist to do a lab result for Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (for pancreatic cancer) but am afraid to ask him. Should I not ask?

I'd like the medical oncologist to do a lab result for Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (for pancreatic cancer) but am afraid to ask him. Should I not ask?

CA 19-9: Hi. Have you had pancreatic adenocarcinoma? If so, I can just about guarantee you your oncologist has ordered a CA 19-9 (or multiple values, following longitudinally with treatment). If you haven't had pancreatic adenoCA, I'm not aware of CA 19-9 being used as a screening tool. In any event, ignorance of facts is never helpful. Go ahead and ask. Good luck! ...Read more

I'm stage 4 Breast cancer. Been having pain in ribs/ shoulder for 2 mths. Also cancer antigen 27. 29 blood test is back above normal. Is cancer back?

I'm stage 4 Breast cancer. Been having pain in ribs/ shoulder for 2 mths. Also cancer antigen 27. 29 blood test is back above normal. Is cancer back?

See your oncologist.: Stage IV describes invasive breast cancer that has spread beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes to other organs of the body, such as the lungs, distant lymph nodes, skin, bones, liver, or brain. Talk to your oncologist to determine the extent/ or remission of the cancer. Stage 4 usually means that cancer was not just in the breast area. ...Read more

Should i be concerned about a positive mage a 4 test? Mage= melenoma antigen gene? I had early cdt lung cancer blood test. Ct of lungs clear

MAGE A4 Tesring : The mage a4 antigen, even though it was named the melanoma associated antigen, is a non-specific antigen that has been linked to a wide variety of tumors. It's efficacy is still being debated as a stand alone predictor. Your physician should investigate and rule out the most likely malignancies for your age and family history, including early breast and oral cancer, as well as others less likely. ...Read more

Does a positive magea4 melenoma antigen gene suggest that I do have cancer? Ct of lungs clear. Mamaagram clear. Ct of pelvis and abdomen clear.

No one knows: Magea4 is an as of yet unproven tumor marker. I'm not sure why it was tested in your case. An elevated level does not mean that you have cancer. The test is simply not that sensitive or specific. ...Read more

What happens if ca 125 is normal .am I free from cancer?

I wish: CA 125 is elevated in some, but by no means all, ovarian cancers, and in enough healthy people to make it not very helpful as a screening test. It's also normal in the vast majority of people with cancer elsewhere. ...Read more

If ca 125 is normal, am I free from cancer or is the cancer hiding?

Neither: If you had an elevated ca-125 prior to surgery for ovarian cancer and the level is down to a normal person's, then we can hope you have a cure, and should the level rise again it will be early warning. By itself, a normal ca-125 rules out nothing. I'm glad you're taking a proactive approach to your health. Good luck. ...Read more

If your ca-125 stays over 200 does that mean there is still cancer in your body?

Not necessarily.: The ca125 tumor marker is a notoriously non-specific indicator of disease (i.e. It can be elevated for reasons other than cancer). It is frequently most useful for tracking the progression or regression of a disease over time and less useful as a standalone diagnostic test. ...Read more

Why wouldn't a ca 125 be zero when there is no cancer? Where is the value above 0 coming from?

Basic lab medicine: A small amount of the substance, which is coded by the normal genome, is ordinarily present in the bloodstream. Immunoassays also detect antigens similar to ca125 as weak signals, and a cutoff is established below which a reading is not suspicious for cancer. These facts have a lot to do with why these markers aren't all that helpful in searching for cancers in folks without any signs. ...Read more
