Can a person with a tibial or a fibula stress fracture (shin splints) still walk or is almost impossible?

Can a person with a tibial or a fibula stress fracture (shin splints) still walk or is almost impossible?

Depends: This would depend on the amount of pain and the severity of the shin splints. Some people with shin splints can still run, while others will really struggle to even walk. I would recommend that you see an orthopedist for evaluation/treatment if your symptoms are really severe. ...Read more

Stress (Definition)

Stress affects most people in some way. Acute (sudden, short-term) stress leads to rapid changes throughout the body. Almost all body systems (the heart and blood vessels, immune system, lungs, digestive system, sensory organs, and brain) gear up to meet perceived danger. These stress responses could prove beneficial in a critical, life-or-death situation. Over time, however, repeated stressful situations put a strain on the body that may contribute to physical and psychological problems. Chronic (long-term) stress can have real health consequences and should be addressed like any other health concern. Fortunately, research is showing that lifestyle changes and stress-reduction techniques can help people learn ...Read more

Stress fracture of fibula? I play college basketball and for 2.5 weeks I've have a pain on the outside lower part of my leg. Hurts to push on,jump, run

Stress fracture of fibula?
I play college basketball and for 2.5 weeks I've have a pain on the outside lower part of my leg. Hurts to push on,jump, run

Unlikely: The fibula does not bear much weight at all, about one sixth of the amount of the other bone in the leg, the tibia. As such, it is very uncommon to get a "stress fracture" in the fibula. A detailed exam and appropriate studies will likely determine the cause of your pain. ...Read more

I believe I have a stress fracture in my heal making it painful to walk. Can this heal on its own if I have to walk on it everyday? Is a brace needed?

Stress fracture ?: Difficult to say without some imaging evidence whether you have a heel fracture. If you are a runner or consistent walker it may be although its also possible that you may have a calcaneal heel spur. There are other considerations such as tendinitis or bursitis, so you really need a full examination and perhaps rest / ice /antiinflammatory with follow up imaging if not better. ...Read more

Stress fracture- 3rd met.- 17 weeks boot, crutches. X-ray- not healed, pain, but specialist says walk normally, no boot. Is that okay or 2nd opinion?

Stress fracture- 3rd met.- 17 weeks boot, crutches. X-ray- not healed, pain, but specialist says walk normally, no boot. Is that okay or 2nd opinion?

Ask, and receive.: It seems hard to believe that an experienced specialist would have you walk on your foot, if he believed that your foot wasn't healed. The decision of healing, after 17 weeks, may take more verification than a x-ray can show. Seventeen weeks can be frustrating for both you and the specialist. I suggest you get a second opinion, in fact, it might be considerate to ask him for a referral for one. ...Read more

Need a podiatrist: You probably need to immobilize the foot for a while. A podiatrist (or an orthopedist) might be able to fit you with a boot/brace to help you heal. This is a tough time to have your activity limited! and the extra pregnancy weight is not helping the healing process. I'm sorry! but proper care now might help avoid a longer term problem. Good luck! ...Read more

My foot hurts when i walk hurts when flex my foot up i had a stress fracture in foot about 9 months ago what else could it b?

Have a foot exam...: Your stress fracture 9 months ago may have been more than just the bone injury. There are several soft tissue structures that overlay the top of the foot. There are tendons and ligaments which may have been damaged. Have the foot checked properly. See a podiatrist for a full foot exam. You had a bone scan and ct scan, but an MRI is a better diagnostic test to evaluate the soft tissue. ...Read more

How do I know when a foot stress fracture is healed b/c my foot hurts when walking but not when i'm resting soon as start to walk it hurts so bad?

Have an X-ray: The only way to determine if a fracture has healed is to not healing across the fracture site with an xray. If you walk on a stress fracture that is not healed, you can risk creating a complication - possibly a displaced fracture. See the doctor and get x-rays. ...Read more

Fracture (Definition)

A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more
