My friend got a blood test for herpes and it came back negative. She has never had any break outs. It is still possible that she could have herpes?

Not likely: With the exception of recent infection that has not resulted in a positive antibody response, a negative blood test and history of no breakouts, is reliable in excluding herpes. ...Read more

If I had a negative herpes blood test at three weeks and seven weeks is it possible I still could have hsv-1?

If I had a negative herpes blood test at three weeks and seven weeks is it possible I still could have hsv-1?

Sure: If you just caught it after the last blood test, you would have herpes-1 now, but a negative last blood test. Herpes-1 is commonly found in people by the time they become adults. It is common enough that it is considered normal to have herpes-1 oral herpes. Usually, there is not a reason to repeated tests for herpes-1 unless a person is worried about catching it on his genitals via oral sex. ...Read more

Did test of HIV, herpes, chlam, gono, syphilis, BV, yeast are negative. Was given Metro. Gel for foul smell, but is still lightly there. Have HPV.

Did test of HIV, herpes, chlam, gono, syphilis, BV, yeast are negative. Was given Metro. Gel for foul smell, but is still lightly there. Have HPV.

Bacterial vaginosis?: Foul vaginal odor usually means bacterial vaginosis (BV). There is no single test that is reliable for BV, so your negative test doesn't mean you don't have it. Best treatment for BV is metronidazole by mouth for 5-7 days; vaginal treatment (MetroGel) usually doesn't work. Trichomonas, an STD, is also possible; make sure you were tested (DNA test, not just microscopic). Nothing to do with HPV. ...Read more

Here are some...: Glad to hear your good response to Jack Itch cream. Since, such creams usually contain anti fungal agent with steroid and direct to suppress and rid skin fungal infection, which inflict warm and moist areas like external genitalia and groins - called tine cruris. For the rashes on penile opening and shaft, you may try the same cream and see if responding in 1 wk. If not, seek pro-evaluation. ...Read more

If 2 partners test negative for herpes by a blood test is it 100% true they do not have it?

Is herpes bad? Can I test positive and mh partner negative?

Is herpes bad? Can I test positive and mh partner negative?

Sort of: Herpes in both forms (oral & genital) itself is manageable for most patients with meds. Gential herpes can be very painful during an outbreak but other times not an issue. You can pass it to your partner even without active lesions but some people seem to not get it as easily so your partner can remain negative. Remember, you are not bad because you have it, but you should let partners know. ...Read more

Test done for herpes came back almost positive. Does this mean I still have it?

Herpes: Tests used to diagnose or screen for herpes include:
pcr blood test: the pcr blood test can tell if you have genital herpes even if you don't have symptoms. The pcr test looks for pieces of the virus' dna. This is the most common test used to diagnose genital herpes and is very accurate.
Cell culture: during the exam, your health care provider can take a sample of cells from a sore. ...Read more

If your herpes test is negative does that mean you are negative for hs1 and hs2?

If your herpes test is negative does that mean you are negative for hs1 and hs2?

Depends: It depends on what the test was for. If the test was a pcr for hsv genetic material, it just means you don't see it in the bloodstream; it's not very useful ruling out the infection. If it is an antibody test, then you need to see if both hsv1 and hsv2 were tested; all that test means is exposure at some point in time to hsv. ...Read more

How accurate are type specific herpes tests? What are my chances of false negatives?

How accurate are type specific herpes tests? What are my chances of false negatives?

PCR is the best test: Serologic blood tests for antibodies can differentiate HSV-1 from HSV-2. However, if this is a recent infection it may take several weeks for serology to be (+) for HSV.

Culture of the lesions will usually be (+) if you have a blister or ulceration due to HSV, but can give false negative results.

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests for HSV DNA and is much more sensitive (few false negatives) ...Read more

Culture came back negative for herpes but could I still have it, should I be concerned?

Depends on symptoms: It is possible to have herpes (genital, oral, or shingles) and still have a negative culture or PCR test for the virus, especially if the outbreak is well on its way to healing. A blood test can check for infection, but a positive result says nothing about the part of the body affected or when infection happened. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more

When u get tested for stud and came out negative does that mean you don't have herpes as well or is it a separate test?

If a herpes culture/test is negative, how accurate is that result?

Depends on timing: False negatives can occur, especially if the ulcer is cultured too late, after healing has already begun. False negatives are less likely to occur when the culture is taken from an intact vessicle (blister) that has been opened for the purpose of the culture, or from a very fresh ulcer. ...Read more

I’ve been tested for herpes twice. My results came back negative both times but still dealing with irritation.?

Herpes II: The only confirmatory test for herpes II is a blood test to see if antibodies to the virus are present. If that was done, and was negative, the "irritation" may be coming from another type of infectious process. See your gyn provider for an exam and culture. ...Read more

Why do I test positive to herpes type 2 and my partner to test negative?

Contagious but...: Herpes is a contagious std which is at its most contagious when you have active lesions. When lesions are not present, the disease can still be contagious but less so. Things that can reduce the odds of spreading to your partner are avoiding sex with active lesions, using anti-viral suppressive meds daily (your doc can help with this) and condoms, but nothing is perfect. Me and my boyfriend both got tested for herpes after sleeping with each other. His test came back positive and mine came back negative. How?

Me and my boyfriend both got tested for herpes after sleeping with each other. His test came back positive and mine came back negative. How?

This is very common: When one person in a couple has genital herpes due to type 2 herpes simplex virus (HSV2), It's transmitted less than once for every 100 episodes of unproteced vaginal sex, maybe only 1 in 1, 000. Even lower for HSV1. So it's very common for one person to test positive (from a past relationship) and the other to be negative. Speak together with doctor about how to prevent future transmission. ...Read more
