I am 10 weeks pregnant...is it ok to take magnesium citrate to treat constipation? Stool softeners aren't working.
No Magnesium Citrate: Hello Shawn Please don't take magnesium citrate to treat constipation. Magnesium citrate is a class C drug regarding pregnancy, which means a "Risk not ruled out", and that "animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus" I would suggest fiber supplementation (eg fiber one cereal), increased water intake, and gentle exercise along with stool softeners like sodium docusate.
Depends on kidneys: Mag citrate has 2 benefits: treats constipation and prevents kidney stone formation. However, if you take mag citrate chronically, you need to check with your doctor because build up of magnesium in the blood could cause heart rhythm abnormality that is occasionally fatal (ventricular tachycardia). Kidney weakness decreases magnesium excretion and builds it up in the blood.See 1 more doctor answer
Not recommended: You do not want to take a laxative daily because if you do your colon will become dependent on it and you will not be able to have a bowel movement without it. Increase water and fiber. You can try a bulking agent like mirilax as needed. See your doctor for other treatments available or to diagnose the cause.

Use with caution: Magnesium salts can bind with levothyroxine (common thyroid medication), if taken simultaneously may reduce absorption of the thyroid medication/ decrease its effect. To reduce this interaction, take thyroid medication at least 4 hours before or after the magnesium citrate dose. Note that other antacids and calcium supplements may also affect thyroid medications; same caution is also advised.
Is it safe to take magnesium citrate 133 mg twice a day, daily for constipation? Thanks in advance.
Constipation & Mg: I would recommend that youj try some other alternatives such as Senna, Miralax, (polyethylene glycol) or even see your doctor about some prescription medications used to treat constipation. Magnesium will enter your systemic circulation and could possibly have an unintended effect on your blood electrolytes.

Day before laparo radical nephrectomy, mom told to take magnesium citrate. What for, and is it supposed to be liquid or pill?
Bowel prep.: Magnesium citrate, which is a liquid that comes usually in a green bottle at the drug store, is often used before laparoscopic surgery to prep the bowel. It is a laxative, and cleans out the intestines of stool. This is usually done the day before surgery, and we recommend starting it early so that the patient is not up all night on the toilet.

Can I take magnesium citrate along with Prilosec and Phentermine? Not at the same time but in the same day?
A one-time thing!: Hi. Mag citrate should be a very rare treat for you! Don't use it regularly. Use it one or two times for bad constipation, but don't use it regularly. For regularity, use fiber laxitives...safe and non-habit forming. And stay well hydrated. Psyllium husk is one of the oldest and best around and works like a well oiled clock! That's the straight poop! ;-)
