Can I take diphenhydramine and loratadine at the same time? Thanks in advance.

Can I take diphenhydramine and loratadine at the same time? Thanks in advance.

Why should you?: Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin) is a mainly non-sedating antihistamine. Diphenhydramine is very sedating and affects the brain if if you don't feel sedated. In severe itching or welts, taking more that the recommended dose of antihistamines is acceptable. I would suggest you double-up on loratadine rather than adding the other and even then only if absolutely necessary. ...Read more

Cani take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with loratadine?

Cani take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) with loratadine?

Probably yes.: Many people report their 'daily' non-sedating antihistamine in the am does not provide relief until next am. So, if no concerns for gu/heart/bp/med-conflict issues, then they often take a 'sedating' antihistamine at night for continued symptom relief and 'bonus' of sleep aid effect. ...Read more

Is it safe to take loratadine and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) together?

Depends: They are both in the same family (antihistamines), but a few people have daytime symptoms so take non-sedating med (like loratadine) and its effect wears off before next day's dose, so take a sedating (/older) antihistamine (like benadryl) at bedtime for continued relief and to aid with sleep. If no heart / urinary / blood pressure issues and no other meds to conflict with, not likely a problem. ...Read more

Yes: Antihistamine is safe even with 4x the average daily dose. The major side effects would be dry mouth and drowsiness (the latter much less common if one uses the non-sedating type). I believe reactine is equivalent to Claritin (loratadine) in the us. Short answer- it is ok. ...Read more

My allergy medicine is not working. I am taking cetrizin HCL antihistamine. I also took benadryl (diphenhydramine) and loratadine tablet but not working. At night time while sleeping feel ok but once you get up and move then symptom comes back.

See physician: A 51 year old male with allergy symptoms taking cetirizine, benadryl, (diphenhydramine) and loratadine without improvement. See an allergist to determine what you are allergic to and also to determine if there is something else going on, like a sinus infection. Add a nasal steroid spray (OTC Flonase or Nasacort) twice a day as well. ...Read more

Is it possible for me to take Claritin d and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at the same time?

Is it possible for me to take Claritin d and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at the same time?

Preferably no: Claritin d should last approximately 24 hours, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) last about 3-4 hours. For treatment of allergic rhinitis or general allergy control most people do not need to take both at the same time. There are some circumstances where both may be taken on the same day but you should be followed and directed by an allergist if you are using so much antihistamines to control your symptoms. ...Read more

My ten year old has seasonal allergies for the first time. I gave her 24 hr Claritin (loratadine) at 7:30 am. It's 9pm. Can I give her children's diphenhydramine?

Okay: This is fine for short or longer term treatment. You might consider some of the newly made OTC nasal sprays with a low dose steroid (Nasocort, Rhinocort, etc.)I find many young women don't like the sprays, but if they will give them a week or two the allergies get better and they can sometimes drop the pills. ...Read more

Can my 8 yr old child who has heart disease take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin at the same time?

Overdoing It: No. Please do not do this. There is so much evidence in medicine that more is not better. One should not mix medications that are similar in nature unless instructed to do so by a doctor. One does not give a child both Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin at the same time. ...Read more

Taking 120 mg pseudoephedrine every 12 hours, 10 mg loratadine in morning, and one Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at bedtime, is this ok?

Taking 120 mg pseudoephedrine every 12 hours, 10 mg loratadine in morning, and one Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at bedtime, is this ok?

Medication question: It is okay to take the pseudoephedrine with the loratadine. However, the nighttime Benadryl (diphenhydramine) would be considered a duplication of the loratadine which is a 24 hour medication. Without knowing more about your medical history, I would not suggest that you do that. Instead, I would suggest discussing the optimum management of your medications with your doctor. ...Read more

Can loratadine be used for a food allergy in place of benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Can loratadine be used for a food allergy in place of benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Maybe. . .: Benadryl is a brand of generic diphenhydramine which is a 1st generation antihistamine. Loratadine is a generic 2nd generation antihistamine. While it's best to avoid foods that cause allergies, answer to your question is a qualified maybe b/c it depends upon type of allergy and amount of exposure. If you're anaphylactic to peanuts, only epinephrine will save you, in which case you need EpiPen. ...Read more
