Can you still have sex when you are being treated for BV ?

Shouldn't : It's best you don't. Get the benefit of having the treatment work for you. Sex is sometimes the cause of bv. You may react to the brand of condoms. Or the spermicide on the condoms. During sex there is a very foul odor. Multiple dr's. Bv was treated over a year ago & tests are good now. Dr's don't know why issue still happening.

Foul vaginal odor: This is most commonly caused by a retained foreign body, most often a tampon or condom left accidentally. It can also be due to a fistula from the bowel and other factors. Hopefully you are being seen by a gynecologist. If your pcp is stumped you need referral. ...Read more

I'm a 20 year old female being treated for BV using the vaginal gel. I'm on a 10 day course. Can I have anal sex during treatment? Protected vaginal?

Whoa Nellie!: Come on buckeroos, how about doing the "unthinkable" by actually waiting until the vaginal infection has cleared as no matter how carefully one "rides that anal horse" bacteria will be spread around worsening the vaginal infection. ...Read more

I've been diagnosed with bv and I was treated for it twice because the green discharge wouldn't go away. It still hasn't gone away, what's the problem?

I've been diagnosed with bv and I was treated for it twice because the green discharge wouldn't go away. It still hasn't gone away, what's the problem?

See your doctor: There are several possible causes of a green vaginal discharge. If you have been treated for BV but still have the discharge, its possible that the diagnosis is incorrect. The best thing to do is to see your doctor and get an exam, cultures and other tests to find out if the diagnosis is correct and treat the correct cause. Best wishes! ...Read more

Hello I've been treated for bv and this is my last day to take medicine. When can I have sex?

Hello I've been treated for bv and this is my last day to take medicine. When can I have sex?

Condoms for a while: There are no firm data. Sex can trigger BV (it's uncertain whether and how often BV is an STD), and it makes sense to wait a while for vaginal bacteria to normalize. I advise my patients to wait until finishing treatment (you've done that), symptoms are gone, especially odor; then use condoms for at least 2 weeks before resuming unprotected intercourse. Also no receiving oral sex for a few weeks. ...Read more

I have done the 7 day monistat and BV meds, but still itchy, what could be the cause? No sex in almost a year.

I have done the 7 day monistat and BV meds, but still itchy, what could be the cause? No sex in almost a year.

Resistant yeast?: Yeast often causes genital itching, but BV usually does not. A few percent of yeasts are resistant to some or all of the "azole" drugs like miconazole (Monistat). You could try a different one, like clotrimazole, terconazole, etc; they'll be in the same pharmacy section as Monistat. But if that doesn't help, you'll for sure need to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

I think i may have a BV (hopefully nothing else) but i also had unprotected sex on 7/24 and 7/27. can i still get pregnant, last cycle was 7/15?

Ovulation: You are most fertile each month days eight to fourteen. Your unprotected sexual encounter is right in the middle of the days leading up to ovulation. The highest risk of pregnancy is during these days. So, yes, of course you are at very high risk of pregnancy. ...Read more

Chronic bv. Docs keep giving metro. Works for a bit then comes back. Tried probiotics. Nothing works. Can it be cured? No sex and still comes back.

Chronic problems: May warrant an evaluation by a vaginitis specialist. If hygiene modification and Flagyl gel or pill has not been working, then their expertise may be needed. Make sure infection has been ruled out. Your doctor can also check for ureaplasma and mycoplasma to see if these organisms are present. The treatment is different. Good luck! ...Read more

I've been treated for BV w/ clindamycin&metran gel&after I was done taking it im having lots of gooey, lil brown specks of discharge&still slight itch.?

Different infection.: A few thoughts: it could be an inadequately treated infection, it could be something different than BV like a yeast infection, two infections (both inadequately treated), or no infection at all and something different. Bottom line is to f/u with your doc- they might want to do a culture to confirm type of infection and thorough exam. Good luck! ...Read more

If I had unprotected sex with someone who had herpes and came back clean with a diagnosis of bv, could I still have the virus? Is my BV in response?

If I had unprotected sex with someone who had herpes and came back clean with a diagnosis of bv, could I still have the virus? Is my BV in response?

Yes and No: HSV testing (in blood) is not definitive especially early on. BV has nothing to do with Herpes. In fact it is not even an infection but an imbalance in vaginal flora. Get retested for Herpes in blood in 3 months -any genital lesions should be cultured for a definitive diagnosis, Recommend Safe sex in future, You are not only sleeping with your partner but also with everyone he has slept with. ...Read more

Is it possible to cure BV and yeast with probiotic capsules alone. I've been treated twice for vaginitis and still have symptoms.

Is it possible to cure BV and yeast with probiotic capsules alone. I've been treated twice for vaginitis and still have symptoms.

Anything possible: But exceedingly unlikely. If you are getting recurrence of BV you may want to have your partner apply antibiotic ointment or cream to the surface of his penis. He may be recolonizing you. There are no proven "natural" ways to address this. Probiotics are certainly not bad, will change the character of your stools, and may even inhibit recurrence but are not curative. ...Read more
