They are different: External hemorrhoids are due to hemorrhoidal disease , develops as they extend out side , usually 3 at 3 hemorrhoidal site. Sentinel pile is single , present at the end of anal fissure usually very painful . as the name suggest is like a guard at the fissure. Drink plenty of fluids , take stool softeners and local care , will heal most of the time , or may need procedural intervention ( surgery ) ...Read more

Just developed my 1st external hemorrhoid. Did not have any even after 2 pregnancies. Will it resolve on its own or do I need to see a dr?

Unknown : Nobody can predict the future. These should probably be checked by your doctor to confirm the diagnosis. In the mean time, its ok to use topical over the counter hemorrhoid creams. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Possibly: Since you have not had any recurrent symptoms for the past 3 years, then likely that is diagnosis. If the bleeding recurs again, however, i would consider a full colonoscopy. ...Read more

Maybe: If this is a persistent problem, you should see your doctor. If its new, try local management first. Topical over the counter cremes, good hydration, moderate to high fibre diet, sitz baths all may help. If the bleeding persists , or is tender, see your doctor. If they are: PAINFUL or are BLEEDING ....a visit is advised....HOWEVER discuss with your GP since the REASON for the chronicity of the hemorrhoids should be discussed!

Your physician may recommend stool softeners particularly bulking agents such as Benefiter or Metamucil which should be taken with meals.
