Don't be in a hurry!: The simplest, most natural way to wean is when your child initiates the process, usually around when solids are started. But if you're ready and they're not, try slowly tapering the number of nursing sessions every two or three days by replacing a nursing session with an alternative meal from a bottle/sippy cup/other foods (if ready). Depend on baby's age: If your baby is younger than 12 months of age, i would recommend baby formula till 12 months. After that you can give homogenized milk, but limit the amount to no more than 24 oz a day. If you give more milk, chance of developing iron deficiency is very high. Plugged milk duct: You may have developed a plugged milk duct, which can happen if you are not emptying out the breast during the weaning process. That backed up milk can then lead to mastitis, an infection of the breast. Two basic plans: Cold turkey: bind yourself & send baby to others to bottle feed until they will for you.(painful & frustrating for both but some do ok.) gradual: drop a feeding every day or two, using bottle instead. Not necessarily: Most treatments involving medications can be designed with breastfeeding in mind. Anesthesia required for surgical intervention could temporarily interfere with breastfeeding but storing enough breast milk for a few days while you recover is a viable solution.
