Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

Are ultrasounds with planned parenthood recommended?

Why Not?: Planned parenthood provides comprehensive women's services. They are probably just as able to do an office sono as any other gyn practice. Of course, as a radiologist I think we do them better! But I'm prejudiced! :-). ...Read more

I went to planned parenthood for my abortion pill and the doctor also prescribed azithromycin and metronidazole I'm not sure why. Is this common?

Genital infection?: Your doctor thought you have an infection. These antibiotics are commonly used to treat vaginal or genital infections, including STDs (especially chlamydia and trichomonas), and for bacterial vaginosis, an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria. Or perhaps the antibiotics were intended to prevent an infection as a complication of the abortion procedure. You'll need to ask the doctor. ...Read more

Probably not: Unless you tell them, but there are situations in which it might be pertinent for the doc to know that history. How much does an abortion cost? Looking for cost inclusive of all required check ups, ultrasounds and all other necessary factors

My: My best advice for you is to find a clinic in your area that performs abortions. Call and inquire about cost. They should be able to give you a price range. I believe the fee is based on how many weeks pregnant the patient is; for example the price someone further along in their pregnancy will be greater than someone in the early weeks of their pregnancy. Also each state has laws as far as when it is legal to perform an abortion. Make sure you and/or the person in question is well informed. ...Read more

I had an ultrasound today and found out I was 3 months preg. But I have an abortion appt next week. Can I still get the abortion?

That depends: On many things, mainly where you live. Many states don't allow termination of pregnancy past 12 weeks. You will need to call your doctor and ask. Finally, if you have a healthy baby and you have already made it past the first few months, consider whether or not you might want to give your baby up for adoption. You may even decide to keep your baby if you are able. Wishing you the best. ...Read more

I'm planning to get another ultrasound to make sure my medical abortion is complete. Is it a good idea? Had a medical abortion a month ago.

Are you bleeding?: It only makes sense if you are still having cramping pain or heavy vaginal bleeding. You didn't say how far your pregnancy was at the time of the abortion, but the earlier it was the less likely you re to have any problems. You doctor can also check your b-hcg levels, which will tell you if you are still pregnant. ...Read more

I had an incomplete abortion a year ago, (then was given Duphaston to clean everything out)& have since had mostly subtle, (sometimes sharp)dull pain in what I think is my right ovary. Get an ultrasound?

Need exam: You should see a gyn or general practitioner. There are many things which can cause pain in that area. You may need an ultrasound, but there may be other things to consider first. Oftentimes people perceive "ovarian pain" when it's really bowels (gastro-intestinal). It could be gas, appendicitis, peritonitis, ligament pain, endometriosis, and on and on. You should talk to your doc. ...Read more

I did ultrasound and dr said I had chemical abortion.. what is that?

You should know?: It is the use of drugs (misoprostyl) to induce an abortion. I do not see how someone can take a drug for abortion, have one, and be unaware of it. In very early fertilization but before the egg is implanted, high doses of birth control hormone can prevent pregnancy (plan B in US) but, this does NOT show in ultrasound. ...Read more

2 kids born 13&15 yrs old. 1 abortion year 06 2 miscarriages yr 06 & 13, I had ultrasound of cervix twice told everything look well. Infertile?

No...: Infertility is defined by someone who is unable to conceive. You have been pregnant so infertility does not sound like it is a problem that you have. Miscarriages are emotionally difficult; however, know that they are very common and most women that have a miscarriage are ultimately able to have a successful pregnancy. ...Read more

Can do a preg. Test: A urine pregnancy test, done correctly, gives a reliable result 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have occurred), or 1 week after missing a period. If done sooner, a positive result is likely real, but a negative result may be due to testing too soon. Urine pregnancy tests are sold everywhere. If the test is positive, then one can decide what to do with her baby embryo. ...Read more

Doctor I have abortion in last month when I consult with ultrasound it shows I have right ovary is enlarged in size and shows an anechoic cyst measure?

Ovarian cysts: Are common. They usually arise from an ovarian follicle (the "nest" that an egg develops in). If the egg isn't released, fluid can build up inside the follicle causing an "anechoic cyst". Ovarian cysts can also occur when the follicle fails to shrink after ovulation. They can happen in pregnancy, even after an abortion. Stick to your Gyno's follow up plan. You should be fine! Dr. Anne ...Read more

12 week vacuum abortion procedure done a week ago, will obgyn be able to detect on ultrasound or will it look like a miscarriage?

12 week vacuum abortion procedure done a week ago, will obgyn be able to detect on ultrasound or will it look like a miscarriage?

Like a miscarriage: As long as the abortion was performed correctly, the only thing visible on sonogram now should be some leftover blood clots (similar to a recent miscarriage). Your uterus will still be enlarged compared to a non-pregnant uterus. And there will still be pregnancy hormone (HCG) in your blood. Honestly, your OB/Gyn will not judge you for having an abortion if that's what you're worried about. ...Read more

After pills abortion its been an year my doctor asking me to go for an ultrasound as womb is not aborted completely is this possible? Cramps are left

Yes, it is possible: After any miscarriage or abortion, it is possible to have some pregnancy tissue retained within the uterus. Many times it will not be noticeable to the patient. "retained products of conception" may be discovered by saline ultrasound or hysterosalpingogram. This may require additional surgery, such as a d & c or hysteroscopy, where a small camera is inserted into the uterus. ...Read more
