Can to much Antacids on a daily basis end up making me tired? I take several a day. One bottle a month.

No

Antacid
I don't know of any reason why it should be making you tired. 2 things to know, however, are that one, you CAN overdose on antacids, since they all contain various minerals that your body can get too much of if you're taking that many antacids, and two, if you're going through that many per month, you need to see a GI doctor to make sure something more serious isn't going on.

Is it ill-advised to use antacids too often?

GI problem

Iron_poor_blood
if you have to take antiacids frequently- that means you may have significant problems with your stomach and you may need to see a GI specialist. Talk to your primary care doctor who can refer you to see GI doctor. in addition, taking too much antiacid may block absorption certain nutrients including iron from food. you may have iron deficiency anemia and that can make you feel tired .

Dr. Dan E. Fisher answered:

Do antacids deplete b12?

Theoretically

Antacids
Lack of stomach acid can cause impaired release of B12 from food. Typical antacids (Tums, mylanta, etc) and intermittent use of other agents are not likely sufficient to affect this in any clinical way, but proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole when taken daily for long periods of time can cause Vit B12 deficiency

Drink water

I have dark stools since taking antacids, why?

Dark stools due to..

Feces
Dark-colored stools may result from iron supplements, foods you eat (like a lot of spinach), substances (like PeptoBismol), but most significantly suggests bleeding. When blood is denatured by acid in your stomach, as from ulcers, stools will turn dark. Blood may also be ingested from nose bleeds, bleeding gums... If stools remain dark, even after stopping antacids, then please seek MD care.

Dr. Jane Steiner answered:

Is there evidence showing antacids are worthless as calcium supplements?

Not necessarily

Body
I have understood that it is perfectly ok to use Tums for instance as a calcium supplement-- it comes in different strengths, including a 750 and 1000 mg strength ( of calcium carbonate). What I had read was that your body cannot deal with more than about 500mg at a time anyway so I'm not sure the strength actually matters. It's important to take the calcium with meals several times daily.

Could my antacids be causing my Iron anemia?

Maybe

Antacids
Some potent antacids can reduce the ability to absorb iron. If iron deficiency is causing anemia, and the anemia is not getting better on appropriate doses of iron, an antacid might, at least in part, be a problem. If there is ongoing blood loss or high iron requirement, from, say heavy menstruation or pregnancy, the amount of iron being taken may be the problem.

Why do doctors keep prescribing antacids?

Antacid pros & cons

Calcium
Many antacids work by neutralizing acid in your stomach. Some contain simethicone that helps break up gas bubbles in your stomach. One floats on top of acid so it "coats" as the acid is refluxed. In any case, antacids must be taken multiple times a day to keep acid neutralized, and benefits are short-lived. Magnesium-containing ones can promote diarrhea; calcium-containing ones can increase acid!
