Garbage label: The gut really doesn't leak.If it did,the germs would get into your blood & you would die. Many use this label to promote various tests and supplements to "heal your leaky gut".Most are a gimmick. If you have true issues like IBS/celiac your injured gut can improve if you identify & avoid your food intolerances/allergies.Probiotics can also help.Beware the comment you have yeast in your gut it's nl ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Real, but...: Don't accept the diagnosis of "leaky gut" syndrome without some real testing -- absorption of sucrose or mannitol. "Non-traditional healers" will diagnose this in most anyone, or encourage self-diagnosis. Use discernment and get a couple of opinions if you are asked to undertake something difficult. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Be discerning: The claim that an extra-permeable gut admits "poisons" into the blood that cause most if not all known health problems was based on some real scientific work from the 1980's but has become a cult / pop diagnosis. It's found almost no acceptance among scientific physicians; the burden of proof's on its proponents. Self-diagnose with it and you'll never feel well again. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Leaky gut diet: I recommend you follow an elimination diet for at least a month. Stop sugar, soy, sweeteners, dairy, eggs, gluten, peanuts, and citrus. "Pop" diagnosis: Mainstream medicine knows little about the impact of food choices on overall health. "Leaky gut" is real and it's at the physician's discertion with informed consent to the patient. Be discerning: "Leaky gut syndrome" is a "pop" / "fad" diagnosis based on some work in the 1980's suggesting that some people have extra-permeable intestinal linings. Supposedly this causes most / all disease. The simple test using the ability to absorb sucrose molecules intact could show that it's real; the burden of proof remains on believers. If you decide you have this, you'll never fell well again. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Leaky gut syndrome: You could have a special test for this using lactulose and mannose. You could also have an IgG test for a panel if foods, and if you react to quite a few of them, you can assume that you do have "leaky gut" or increased permeability of the gut. In my practice we usually just do the IgG panel. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Leaky gut: That is a tricky question because we are not commonly taught about "leaky gut" in allopathic medical training, so it is not a common diagnosis. It is a very common condition in my opinion as an M.D. with certification in Functional Medicine. There is current research at Harvard by Dr Allessio Fasano around this, so it should be more and more recognized by all physicians in the coming years. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
